I just purchased a 400 watt HPS lighting system. I have a powerful vent and three fans in my small closest (2 feet by 6 feet with two sliding doors) , my very accurate thermometer is sitting on the plant pots and so is very definitely in direct light. The light is 20 inches above the 3 inch tall two week old plants. I can't get the temperature to go below 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Is this temperature too high or should the thermometer be placed somewhere else, like on the wall where little light would be beating down on it? At this temperature I can't get the light closer to the plants without increasing the temperature at the level of the leaves. Any suggestions would be appreciated ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Your temps are fine....and 20 inches isn't a bad place to keep your light. watch for stretch. if it doesn't happen, you are well on your way to happiness. Welcome to the garden.

![]() | Like swapmeet said, 83 isn't too bad of a temp. A little on the high side but no biggie. 20 inches from the tops of plants w/ a 400 isn't too bad either. I believe that if you could be better though. The yield-o-rama lists the sweet spot of a 400 @ 9-10 inches. You lose 4 times the available lumens everytime you double the distance from your light, so if you cut it in half your plants will be working with much more usuable energy. What you need, my friend, is a cooltube reflector. You may want to look into either buying or building one. These reflectors can do magic for your temps, and your ability to get the light much closer. Gradually work those 2-week plants closer to the light, if you give 4x the intensity immediately they may get a shock. http://www.gardenscure.com/420/const...cool-tube.html check that link out, it'll help you out. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | dude 83 is great congratulations! I cant keep my closet below 84 with 150w of light let alone 300 that I could be running. and will be running soon. And I dont care. I just use more aquashield ![]() keep them watered sufficiently and give the leaves a spray with plain water every so often. perspiration will leave salts on the blades remember pot grows in the desert if you take care of it. Im guessing that you're growin in soil? keep an eye on your ph and dont over water.

some thermometers don't do well in direct light put an aluminum foil TeePee over your thermometer you want the air temp at the plants sometimes the thermometers give a false read with the light hitting them I've found I always have to have my air intake temperature 5-10 degrees cooler than I want my plants to keep my plants at 73 in the flower room, my mancave has the ac set on 68

![]() | The tinfoil tent didn't reduce the temperature on the thermometer (81 at night to 89 at its highest point during the day). But my hand feels comfortable in the direct light at the top of the leaves. The two and three inch tall plants look fine after 17 days of growth. That is kind of short though isn't it, for Northern-Lights?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | my temps can go up to 95f,no ventilation except the door, its 85f at the lowest, doesnt seem to have hurt the plants, yield is perhaps smaller, im not sure yet. i need to water more often, thats the only thing im really sure of. i like more to grow in the 75f range, but this seems to be ok, i have a few bottles of yeast and sugar for co2 too, trying that out.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I'm not sure about the growth of NL, but if they look otherwise healthy, let 'em rip. If they aren't wilting or browning, 17 days growth (from seed I presume??) and 2-3 inches high seem about right. As for the temps, 83 is a touch higher than most people like it, but if the plants don't mind then neither do I. ![]() I agree with ceyx, though- if you want lower temps, you could use a cool tube. I made one, with a stanley blower modification, and it keeps it so cool I can touch the tip of the 400Watt bulb when its on!! DIY a cool tube for about 10-20 bucks, plus a fan. Search google for DIY COOLTUBE site:gardenscure.com and you'll see a few.
