Major, 5 gallon is generally considered too big for hempy......you don't need all that extra space and distance from top of bucket to the res is that much more. Most people use 2-3 gallon pots.

I use 3 gallon mop buckets, 2 bucks each at menards. Pencil sized hole about 2 inches up, and I fill to within 2 inches of the top. Works great!!

Seedlings I agree with BC- water every day till roots hit res- you'll see a jump in growth and you'll know they are there. Then every 2-3 days, I prefer 2 but have let them go 4 when I wasn't around. Water till you get some water coming out of the hole.

I like to do a plain-water top off every week, but then my Satori doesn't like a lot of nutes.
I just think a little plain water now and then helps avoid salt build up, plus it's cheaper.
Good luck with the grow!!

I honestly don't remember - they just grew out of it.

reusing soil

I know this is a little off topic but I'll ask here instead of starting a new thread.
Has anyone ever reused the soil from a grow? I mean after you harvest, dump the pots out, mix up the dirt with some more good stuff like humus and start a new grow in that soil? I've not done it yet but I made some kind of expensive soil this time and wanted to use it again.
Anyone?

personally, my to-the-point answer is NO. once your done with a grow, think about all the strenuous shit that your soil has gone through, throughout the entire course of it. Ph upped, ph downed, flushed, salt built up, leached, flushed, finalized with molasses or similar (not everyone does this i know), and NUTED countless times. Most, including myself, consider this soil "spent". it's worked hard, done its' job, and now you just gotta let it retire. plus, if you correctly treat your ladies right before you cut 'em down, you've flushed out most of any good viable matter that your soil once had. I usually do, on the other hand, re-use soil from my males that have to go. but not with another 'herb' project, i use it in compost, and my regular garden. FFOF is expensive haha, it just makes me feel better than dumping it.

Not MJ but other plants. One thing to look out for is, many pests' eggs can stay in the soil. If you had pests, maybe let the soil rest or sterilize it in an oven.

Though I hate sterilizing soil- it destroys a lot of makes it soil Vs. dirt, IMHO.

But if you didn't have a major infestation of something that lives in the soil for part of it's life, go for it. Throwing out soil you paid for is silly.

Ever think of a worm box to help make more soil and soil amendments? Throw a couple redworms in the soil in each pot, too, if you're using gentle organic nutes. Can't hurt.

Re- mixing should be fine. People do it all the time. Just watch the nutrient levels- it'll be deficient in some things maybe.

IF you are not using harsh nutes, that is. in soil gentler is better.

Yeah, I've never reused any but was just wondering to save some $$. I might try it one day if I have some spare seedlings but I'll probably just get new stuff and recycle the spent dirt to my vegetable garden. Thanks for the answers.
BTW I only use organic ferts....fish emulsion etc. always have always will.

Well then welcome to the garden kanabys and mcninnc, I didn't notice your post count at first.
Why not try it on one pot now, see how it works? that way you only risk 1 seedling.

Of course, still watch out for bugs if you had them before.
