Very slow ripening
permalink

Hello-

Have some Blueberry (DJ Short) that is on day 80 of flower now. Still not ripe. I cannot find real stats on this variety, though similar strains seem to be ~65 days and someone said they took their BB "all the way to day 70".

They are getting resinous, most trichs are cloudy now but very few are amber and there are still a few clears. The pistils are almost all still white with just a few on some tips going rust. The buds have still not fattened up as much as I would have expected, though they are doing so very slowly.

Is this likely just a very slow strain (some sativa really coming through?) or:

1) cool temps (50s in the evenings)
2) light leak from veg room (I don't think so but is possible, is this how it would manifest?)

There are some Mandala#1 growing alongside it ripening on a much more normal pace, so I do not think it is environmental.

I am not impatient, I am willing to wait 90 or 100 days or whatever, but this seems very unusual to me and I would like to learn as much as I can about what is going on.

Any insight is appreciated.

50 degrees is cold man. if i remember right plant growth stops at 60 degrees and below. maybe this could be holding you up. and you really can't compare to another strain, too many variables.

I do have another strain to compare it to, Mandala#1 is growing right next to it and ripening normally. I know 50 is not ideal but isn't it similar to a lot of the perfect outdoor harvests that happen on the coast? I know lots of Humboldt is well in the 50s in September... I am curious if anyone has real experience in cooler temps causing a ripening delay.

my room gets pretty cold too about 62 degrees so i guess i'm in the same boat but have never noticed it slowing down a plants ripening process.are you growing from seed ? its could just be a slight variation of a pheno of the strain that takes a little longer ? i know it sucks to sit and wait. i guess she will be done when she says not when u make her, lol.

Sounds alot like what I'm going through. My plants look ready to go, and the bud I smoked a few days ago was good. It's a 60 day strain and it still has 2.5 weeks to go. This is going to be my biggest plant and I owe it all to transplanting from a 2l botting into 1g bucket a few days after I know she was female or at time of flowering.

Don't worry, even some of the experienced growers get a little antsy. Damn! 20 days to go....

Wish I had the Blueberry too.

50 degrees is cold, and could certainly delay ripening and change the bud structure. I generally try to keep my night time temps above 65, if its much colder i'll throw in a heater...

As mentioned above transplanting during flowering will also delay things

Seems to me if you have plants in the same environment (and your using the same res) and all things are equal, it just boils down to a strain issue.

Since your trics and hairs are starting to turn, I would just keep a close eye out for mold and let um do their thang dude. Keep a fan on them so mold can't get a hold.

Thanks for the feedback, folks

I'll repeat that I am not impatient. I don't mind waiting 100 or more days. It just seems to me that 85+ days is _really_ slow for an indoor optimized strain, especially when the "competitors" versions of the same strain-class is 65 or so days. DJ Shorts other plants (which do have published specs) are also much shorter. I am just finding this really interesting/peculiar.

I think I will fire up the heater tonight, as it seems to be getting even colder. Its certainly possible that Blueberry is not as cold-tolerant as Mandala#1.
