Is it worth it to have side lighting?
permalink

I have 6 plants (all around 4ft tall or so) under a 600 w HPS. They are in they're 5th week of flowering. Im thinking about adding 2 - 4 ft T5 lights (54 W, 5,000 lumens each) to add lighting to mostly underneath where theres not much light. Im doing this to hopefully increase yield (obviously and because ive had a bit of a powdery mildew problem, although its improving because of an added fan. I just figured there some people that can give their 2 cents on this as im a noob - only have done autoflower before.

Thanks!!

YEs it will help, but the question is how much will it help?

If your working with a longer 9-12 week strain the extra light should help a noticible amount. If your working with a shorting 7-9 week strain then not so much.

any more light you add will help. i've never worked with T5's but 4'ers should help a considerable amount on the next grow for sure, and if you have them you might as well add em. more light is good in most any case if you ask me, as long as heat isn't an issue.

also if you have a really flat canopy and there's not much like at all like ya mentioned, it should help you undergrowth tremendously. 5 weeks already into flower so you may have to crop the top of it first and let the lower buds go for another week or so.

i'd love to see some pics of what you got goin' on bud! sounds like your doin' fine on your first non-auto

Also if you can get the plants close enough to the usable side lighting. It should help. If plants are say 2 feet from a standard CFL, not sure if it's going to make a difference.

You can never have too much light! The better lit the shaded portions of your plant are the more they will grow. For example, lets say u put all your lights on one side of your plant instead of over top, you would have a plant that is much more developed on one side than the other. However the side without the direct light would train itself and grow around towards the light creating uneven growth and a space problem. Try to light those babies up from all directions. Id utilize LST as well. LST definitley utilizes space much more efficiently. Good luck.

Hey Col., how's that odor? Did you find a submarine size airfilter? LOL!
Really, all the light you can shine, do it. Probably late on this batch, but SURE won't hurt. I bought some of those LED squares w/100 blue and red leds that I hung around the sides. No A-B tests, but I 'feel' they helped lower development....
I'd go with mushmouth and say get another big hps if the temps can handle it. Intensity=Density

Almost as big, lol--works great though! Thanks for the info. Im wondering if it will really be worht the electricity usage = more buds. The blue cheese plant seems to be benefiting, but it may just be at that certain stage of growth where the lower branches are getting bigger buds. As far as LST, id really benefit from that...something I need to look into. This is my first "real grow", the other 2 were lowryder #2....a big difference in a way. I will say, I got great end results with those autoflowers though!!
