Could someone tell me if this setup would be an electric hazard? And possibly explain in brief the limitations of a single socket to providing power to my entire closet grow. Thanks.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | A single socket can provide a safe load of about 1500w without worrying about blowing a circuit. (15amp circuit, standard usa house circuit) (it can actually take about 1800, but power can spike so you need to be within a safe range) Everything has a wattage rating on it, powerstrips, timers, etc... Look at the back of your powerstrip, timers, etc It will tell you how many watts it can support. A powerstrip *usually* supports about 1500W-1800W, but double check. Assuming you have a standard 15 amp circuit for the outlet you are using, and the fan is not over 100w, and you use power strips with the appropriate wattage rating, you could actually run that same setup three times on the same outlet without worrying about electrical failure

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I was pretty sure it was 1500, But I wasn't going to tell someone that without being sure ![]() I've had my 600W HPS plugged into a timer into the power strip, and a 800W AC unit plugged into the same socket (just not the power strip) and had no problems. I've found it smart to run from the same socket than to run a long extension cord from another socket. And a smoke detector is always a good investment ![]()

What can blow circuits is things that power spike, like drills. The faster the drill motor is going, the more watts it is using. I've blown the circuit once or twice not thinking and using a drill. I would think hairdryers would be the same.. Gotta make sure the circuit is dedicated, and not being shared for anything else *edit* Oh jeez, forgot to say I plugged too much into a timer that couldn't handle it, with a power strip I now have a non functioning timer, non functioning powerstrip, that sparked and got so hot in a split-second-- that the coils of the metal to the powerstrip plugged into the timer are now WELDED into the timer Not even a macho man could unplug the powerstrip from the timer. electricity is a scary bitch Last edited by g1ithc; 11-20-2009 at 12:03 PM..

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Running that kind of wattage through that setup should not cause you any problem, however; it is not the matter of whether or not it CAN run on a certain setup, but if it SHOULD run on certain setup--you CAN do lots of things, but what you SHOULD do is a shorter list. Always try to avoid or limit the use of extension cords, splitters, power strips, etc, when running large and continuous amounts of electricity. Always make sure the above mentioned equipment is quality and rated for what you are using it fore. Always respect it.Last edited by Them; 11-20-2009 at 01:01 PM..
