Cool heat problem!
permalink

Ok, I have finally made my setup for growing (which will hopefully commence Mon. if my seeds arrive ) but with just the four 48" 40 watt fluoro. bulbs the temperature in my closet got up to 93 degrees. For Most of the evening it was between 85-87 degrees which is pushing it but ok. My closet is about 2' x 6' (maybe a tiny bit bigger) and about 6 feet high, maybe a little higher. Its in a room that is prob. 15' x 15'. I have an a/c unit on high that keeps the room cool, and its only a few feet from the closet. Should I just keep the door to my room locked, and leave my closet door open? Or will to much light escape? Because I am pretty sure leaving the door open will def. cool it off in there. If thats a bad idea, what other options do I have to cool it down? I have like 4 or 5 fans blowing air around in the closet as well. Please help. Thanks.

cut a whole in the door one on the bottom one on the top.. bottom - intake.. top - exhuast.. but if you can't do that leave the door cracked, or totally opened.. since thats the only way to keep it cool in there

yea if you can, just leave the door completely open. Controlling the high temps in that closet is more important than the minimal amount of light that you might lose.

mylar?

Thanks for the help guys. What do you think about putting some mylar in front of the closet so that it blocks most of the light as well. I will leave a gap at the top and bottom for exhaust/intake fans and so cool air can get in. Good idea, bad idea?

...I left the closet open for the day and the temperature dropped from 96 degrees to 85 degrees in no time. Thank God!

I've done two grows in a closet about that size, and heat has seriously limited my harvest both times. I've heard everyone here preaching about every bit of light being important, and I agree, but I think on my next attempt I will have to sacrifice some light in order to leave the closet door open. (I have a 400 HPS, btw). I can't cut holes in the closet or door, so leaving the door open is really my only option.

One idea I've had is using one of those windshield reflectors (the kind with a "flat-finish" type reflective surface, not a mirror-like one), and putting it across the bottom of the doorway. Maybe that will help reflect some light back at the underside of the plants, while still allowing heat to escape over the top. Just a thought.

here's an idea!

try to get a piece of cardboard about 6"-1' wide and as tall as the closet. Then, attach it to your closet door so that when your door is a little bit open, the cardboard covers the opening. That way, you don't have to cut holes in the closet door for intake/exhaust fans, but you can cut them into the cardboard instead!
just an idea,

remote the ballasts
permalink

I have an indoor box 3' x 2' x 2.5' with 4 - 40 watt u tube Cool white flouros, two ballast run them. I originally had the ballasts mounted inside the box, but they made two much heat, ast the cabinet heated up the ballast ran hotter and made more heat. I moved the ballast outside the box were they get plenty of air and they run MUCH cooler. Just my 2 cents.
I attached a pic but my digicam sux..

JUST LEAVE THE CLOSET DOOR OPEN WITH THE ROOM DOOR HALF OPEN OR ALL THE WAY OPEN AND PUT ANOTHER FAN RIGHT OUT SIDE THE ROOM DOOR....THIS BRINGS IN FRESH AIR FROM OUTSIDE OF THE ROOM (FROM THE HOUSE...LEAVE SOME WINDOWS OPEN IN THE HOUSE)
