Question indoor growin'
permalink

i just started growin again, this time in my closet. i have started by taking 2
egg cartons( 2 X 7's ) and filling them with normal potting soil, planted the seeds 1/2 inch into the soil. Im using 2 flourescents hanging bout' a foot above. i plan to transfer the plants into pots as soon as i see the sproutings.
think this technique will work? any advice would be much apprectiated.

The egg cartons will work to start, the flouros need to be closer than a foot? at least 3 inches away or as close as you can have them. They can grow into the flouros and do fine. If you're trying to do it all with flouros then by all means good luck

Actually where the lights are right now is fine, to my understanding the plants haven't sprouted yet, but when they do sprout yes they need to be moved down to about 2" near the plant. Actually, the light probably isn't even needed at all right now, until they sprout. I don't buy the "They need to know which way is up" stuff.

There is some evidence that seedlings need at least four inches or room to send down a taproot in order for the maximum number of females to develop. This is the reason (allegedly) why some folks consistently have problems with a larger percentage of males.
Just food for thought- I would never start seedlings in such a small mass of soil- it dries out way too fast and just isn't enough room to support roots. Plus you'll have to transplant them when they are still small and delicate- too much room for error.

interesting 3hounds,

i was going to get hold of some "plug trays" for my next (hopefully more successful attempt) at growing, used for starting seedlings in professional nurseries.

but if theres evidence that the seedlings need space to send a root down that far, ill reconsider.

You can find "deep" plug trays, but they are borderline deep as far as MJ grows go. I make sure to use something that gives me a minimum of 4½-5 inches of soil depth.

When I have unpredictable seeds......

I use peat moss, the lil discs to start the germ,
than I toss em in the medium 4 inches below,
as soon as I see taproot activity

That werks for me!
