Reflectix or white paint?
permalink

I am using a metal server case for my box. I was looking at the Reflectix, but I was wondering if it will keep my box hotter then white paint?

I would have to use spray paint for metal since my box is all metal, does that matter?

flat white is best, and yes something like reflextix may reduce your ventilation thus increase your temps, just slightly though im not shure if flat white comes in a spray? but even if it dosnt you can get a good white paint that will reflect most of the light and either way its WAY cheaper

Can you use regular flat white paint with a paint brush on metal?

If you can find barite (barium sulphate, BaSO4), wich is very cheap but difficult to find, except if you have access to a chemical product shop or work or know somebody who works in construction (its used to increase density of building's basements), the mix of latex flat white paint+barite (at 40/60% weight, 60/40)% volume) works very, very well and takes perfectly over metalic surfaces (i painted my aluminium floro reflectors with it).

But with any coating you use, the thicker the reflective layer, the higher the reflectance. Five hands of paint work better than 2.

Not true.

Reflectix is more reflective than flat white paint and will do nothing "reduce your ventilation" unless you put it over your intake or exhaust ports and obstruct airflow.

Fully agree, but although he expressed it wrong, because it isnt ventilation related, he was right in one sense: reflectix tends to make a hot air layer between it and the wall, reducing cooling (not ventilation).

And it have another disadvantage in a very small cab, depending of the lighting: specular reflection, increasing the risk of hot spots, especially using HPS.

The way to increase flat white paint reflectance is using barite with it. BaSO4 is used in integrating sferes due to its very high reflectance and lambertian behavior (no hot spots). The mix with paint increase its durability and enhances its reflectance over mylar and reflectix setups in real conditions, due to the far easier manteinance.

What a thiefs! Barite cost almost none, i buy it at 96% BaSO4 purity at 1€/kg (buying just 1kg) or 0,39€/kg (buying 25kg) in a chemical products retail shop
