I created a protptype of what I was thinking about. I figure I can duct tape the missing piece back in place and use more tape to create a hinge effect on the sides of the tray. Then set this up just off the current soil. When it roots I can just transplant it to the pot the 'tray' is sitting on in the pic.

if the hinge doesn't work, or as another option 2 cups.....both have the hole in the bottom each has 25% or 90 degrees missing nest them together put them up to the plant then turn one 180 degrees it should lock them together pretty well 90 degree overlap on both sides

Then all you have to worry about it keeping it wrapped and not supported. Well, at least if you weren't going to do it right at ground level, I guess for others to do if they feel like it. possibly get 3 or more plants off this original? but why does this differ from just turning any one of her clones into a new mother? the amount of original genetic materiel? with a new root system......isn't this just a giant 1st generation clone?

I have read about loss of vigor doing clone from clone... I just wanted to see if it could be done. In regard to clone from clone it appears that most of the degradation happens as clones gather small differences as time goes on. Penguin has written a lot on this. So I wanted to see if it could be done. I have some other clones as a backup, if need be. They would be 4th 'generation', so no problem there. There may be other applications as well. Alternative to root trimming, added root mass without repotting. One advantage I can see is better utilization of the upper 1/3 of the soil in my pot. If I replant the 2" deep layer of rooted soil on top of new soil I will have roots traveling down from a solid network of roots covering the top of the pot. Sorry for going on and on-bubblehash .

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Here it is filled with soil. I used the sticks that are sticking up and down to stabilize the unit. I don't want it shifting about and stressing the roots that are developing. I also used sticks to form a 'platform' of sorts to keep the bottom level and above the level of the original soil. I will need room to get my knife/saw in there.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | This is a good sign. That little fuzzy white thing sticking out at about 7:00 from the base of the stem is a root. Funny thing is, it didn't come from the AL site, just grew to the soil. She has done this in other incarnations as well. Must be more where that came from. For the record I just fed her main soil 2 days ago as she was looking a bit rundown. Looking better. Last edited by xyz; 12-03-2007 at 05:02 PM..

Three days ago I pulled back the side of the 'tray' just a bit and saw many roots on 2 of the 3 sides I could 'peek' into. There is some nice looking new growth showing up so she seems to responding to the feeding. I didn't feed the 'tray'. I will let her go for a while longer. Looking for more of that nice new growth and more root development.
