I'm in my first grow. I've got my plants in a hydroponic drip system. I had a couple of extra seedlings that I planted in a dirt pot. They are waaaaaaaaay behind in growth and are only about 10-12 inches tall with 5 or 6 nodes. I've just switched to 12/12 lighting during the past week. If one or both of these are female I thought I could use them as mothers. My question is will they flower enough to determine sex at this small size? If so, then I should reveg under 20/0 or 18/6 lights, correct? BTW, I'm sure the difference in size is due to the soil vs. hydr and less dillegent care on my part. The genetics are good some white widow and blue berry. So far I am quite happy with my first try. I started 18 seeds, 17 germed, lost one seedling at about one week. The only bad news is I've culled 3 males already, and I suspect at least 5 more are males. Thanks in advance!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | They'll flower enough to show sex at that stage. You should reveg on whatever light cycle you use for vegetative growth, whether it be 24/0 or 18/6. Once they change back to veg. their growth will be slowed for several days, so don't worry about them not growing during that time, they'll bounce back. If you want to be extra careful and you have the time, you could slowly put them into flower by adjusting your lights by 2 hours every day (from 18/6 to 16/8 to 14/10 to 12/12) and then back, but that's just extra caution so there's no hermie activity. Good luck!

... you should take some of the less developed branches as clones now. And if they turn out boys... you can just toss 'em ![]() I would take them from lower on the plant, somewhere that the plant puts as low priority. At least with the strains I am familiar with, I have noticed that pre-flowers show later on the lower areas of a plant. So, with absolutely no scientific evidence to back up my claim ( ), I believe that they have less developed hormonal changes towards flowering. Make sense? Hope so ... the local kush kicks my ass sometimes ![]() The clones would serve as a back-up to your mothers (if you decide to re-veg them) ... and may even give you usable cloning material before the mothers can ... sometimes, they take months to get back to good vegetative growth! The WW x NL I had spent 7 weeks, thinking about life, before she was good to go again ![]() If you do take the clones now ... please keep us posted ![]() M.M.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | how many mothers do you need? lets say you need 3 total - you should easily get more than 20 clones per mother thats 60 clones total for 3 plants clone each of the plant 6 times - then watch the growth of the original seeded plants to see which is the best all around = female, volume of bud, clones easily, resistant to nute imbalances, potentcy and all around health which ever female ends up being the strongest from the seed grown plants choose the best 3 of the clones from that plant then grow those as mothers and finish the rest of the females to flower now your mothers are from the strongest and best plant of the bunch and so when you clone it all your clones will be the same when cloning you are duplicating the mom exactly - the better the mom the better the clones ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i would be worried about using a plant that has grown weak as a mother - if it is a weak plant for any reason then all the clones from it could be weak also - then your entire garden will be weak you cant say for sure if it was the enviroment and your lack of attention to them or if the plant is just a bad pheno you want your moms to be the best they can be so your clones are strong and bud well

![]() | Ok, 'nother question. I have some clones that I took from one of my plants just before switching them to 12/12 light. Now the plant I took them from is showing to be female and growing well. (The sad part is that we ended up with just four females out of 14 plants. ) I only have the one HPS sodium at this point. I'll have a fluoro grow light up soon. Can I put these clones in the HPS for 12 hours with my blooming plants and then give them indirect light from a window for another 8 hours or so? Will that be enough to prevent them from flowering? Any other problems with this that I'm not thinking of? Thanks everyone for helping out this nooby.

something sounds wrong to me with your plan- or maybe i just dont understand clones need a wee bit of light until well rooted - hps is going to fry your clones you need a very week flou and a humidity dome, bublier or ez cloner if you dont have a flou (they are cheap) i would try just the sun maybe until rooted but in my opinion it may fail since enviroment is critical and i dont know what the weathe ris like where you are get a cheap flou tomorrow -- unless you wan to loose your clones and start over again i think you should do alot of reading get a book from the hydro store on cloning or go on youtube and watch Remo - i dont have the link but someone here will anybody else??? ![]()

![]() | bagabones, Sorry I wasn't clear. About two weeks ago, I put these cuttings in a homemade bubble cloner, from plans I saw on this site...don't remember the link now. I started four cutting and they've all had roots for about a week. I've just put them in an aeroponic system a couple of days ago...they are growing roots like mad now. Right now they're getting about 11hrs of indirect sunlight in a window. Now I have some tomato cuttings in the cloner...i'm going to end up with more plants than I know what to do with! lolThey're not showing any leaf growth at the moment. I've removed the humidity dome and they look perfectly healthy. No wilting or drooping at all now. If I put them in my grow room (currently at 12/12) they would be about four foot below the hps and somewhat shaded by the bigger plants. I have a fluoro but don't have it mounted...hopefully my boyfriend will be over tonight or in the am and we can get it mounted and in use. Thanks again for your advice. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | im sorry - my bad i misunderstood yes you ca put them under the hps no problem - then you can lower it a few inches a day over about 1 weeks time until you get to your desired height (usually as low as you can where you can get your hand just above top of plant and it doesnt feel hot hot)
