Good evening, I've always wondered this as well.. as i've always took clones the same as Matt

I think the idea is that you are not wanting to fuel (or support) vegetative growth during the cloning period. You want all the "chi" to go to the roots You also don't want big leaves' metabolisms draining the plants. Or sumpthin' like that. Someone who knows what they are talking about could probably say it better.

That is correct mayan, and is so wrong to do it.
I mean think about it for a minute here.

You cut a stem with a lots of care not to let anything even air to enter the stem but then you cut the end of a leaf and leave an open wound that now the plant will most likely spend all its energy to repair and since there are no roots it will start eating it self.

I wish people start treating plants as living things.

Yes, a fresh clone will root faster if it had smaller leaves, but why not cut the leaf off all together or manage to take smaller cuts.

So much is mentioned about the "skill" of cutting a 45 degree cut with a clean blade and all that b/s and then someone takes a pair scissors and mutilates half the vegetation.

Please don't get me wrong, not knocking the people who do, I just want you to think simple and stop doing it, it doesn't help and the plants don't like it.

And if you insist of doing it, cut the leaves the day before while still on the plant, so the brunch can cure it self before you take the cut.

Besides you can clone big clones with many fan leaves just keep the RH higher.

Bellow its a top that was the size of a small plant and rooted in 12 days in its own 2 / f3 bucket.
Look at how green are the leaves after it came out off the dome with roots, it even has side growth.

I do both, take a 3-5 inch clone, and their usually isn't a big fan leaf on there, but if their is, I cut the whole thing off, only leaving a couple small fan leaves.

I noticed people who cut the tips of the fan leaves, they still yellow anyway (most times), so why bother?

Im not knocking it either, just thought it was an odd thing to do.

EDIT: Thanks for clearing that up Lucifer (er... Lou Cypher)

Why be simple when you can make things horribly complex and oh so complicated?!?

Actually, in my two (and only) successful cloning sprees, after reading the E-Z Cloning Method by Meister Lou Cypher, I do admit to having experimented with trimming some leaves the first time. I don't think it made a difference either way. The second time, I didn't do it...EXCEPT, I did notice that -since my brunches were bigger the second time around - there were some big leaves and I felt like the brunches with those leaves were drooping. At that point, I actually just cut the leaves off. The plants did appear to respond favorably and there was no harm, no foul. BUT...everything that Lou has said makes a great deal of sense (sinse) to me...as per ususal.

Wow now I feel dumb, well not really, but I cut the tips off on mine... Oh well, won't do that any more.

So The first batch of clones I took are at seven days tommorrow, and are yellowing slightly, no wilting though.

I took more clones on thurs. because my mother was getting too tall.

Still waitin on roots, but I know they'll root, it's all about the patience.

what is in a name Don, other than each is a different sound so we know if/when to turn around, when someone is calling!.

But really, to make you feel much better since I know you're a religious person, think of it the way I do.

Lucifer means, [the one who brings the light], and thats a good thing my friend.
In the real world I'm, trying very hard to be that person, and put a smile on everyones face regardless my mood.

Overall I'm a good person Don and that name suits me right, cause I earned it.
Been to hell and didn't change me, I'm still a good person.
