I haven't heard of the difference in taking the top vs the sides for mother plants and genetic drift

Is this how all of you do it? I haven't read that anywhere

I've not heard that there is a genetic variance in clones taken from tops or sides either. Not sure why there would be. I mean, DNA should be constant throughout the plant, no? When I take softwood cuttings (which is what clones are) from any other nursery plant the thing that matters is the age of the slip. Can someone explain why cannabis would be different in this regard?

Thanks!

alright gl1tch, thanks for the link. I don't have time to read all 25 pages while I am at work but ll be reviewing that thread sometime tonight or tomorrow night. I am eager to read about this one.

I just find it strange that I havent heard of it till now and no books I have read have mentioned this before.

Hehe, onward into a new abyss

I'll go on and agree with the Dr, I like keeping moms also and replace them every three months or so.Clones to be moms are always tops of main stems only for me.
Thanks, I thought I did well also. I cloned extra because I figured more would die. For anyone interested, I used this method:

rockwool cubes that I soaked good, drained off the excess and let sit 24 hours. Wore gloves, took care to make clean angled cuts, took the cuttings from lower branches in vegetative state, at least 4 nodes per cutting (4 - 6" or so), cut the branches from one node and used liquid rooting hormone on the two cuts. Put them in a plastic tray and dome under 4 26watt CFLs, kept the humidity at 95% plus opening them and fluffing them up once a day, spraying and adding water as I felt needed to keep the humidity up.

Needless to say I can't wait to try again.

Do you find that using the tops is better for overall quality or performance or do you just do it out of preference and theory?

Indiegurl

I do it, cause the main stem its the oldest most mature part of that plant.

Let me explain that a bit.

When you hear 'my plant its a month old', that is not totally correct.
The main stem its that age, but not the side brunches.

A lot of people take a clone from a lower part of the plant with out realizing that brunch might only be 2 weeks old, not a month as the main part of the plant.

And its a fact of course that the oldest the plant vegged the more opportunity it got to reach its strain genetic potential.

So if you're cutting a clone for a mom, the top will be the oldest of all.
