What happens to the branch, after a cutting is taken?

When you take a cutting for cloning, what happens to the branch you took the cutting from? Does it split, and form 2 new branches, like a plant would when you pinch the top? I came up with only 2 females out of 10 plants, how will I get the most yield, by taking some clppings for cloning and flowing them with the 2 plants or just growing the 2 plants out? Thanks for the help!!!!

kinda depends on where you make the cut. If its too close to a node, then nothing tends to grow out/up from it (sometimes). If its not too close to a node, then (usually) two more branches will grow from that cut.

One more question, for clones should I take my cuttings close to the nodes or away? is there a right or wrong place to cut?

tertiary growths rarely form well and end up with good colas. I take my clones where ever 4-5" ends from the tip.

So you are saying, that more then likely not much is going to grow from the limb after I take a cutting? What about my question on overall yield?

well.. if you take a clone from a nice secondary growth, you'll lose a good deal of yeild.

but if you take one of those small secondaries that just didnt get as much light and is pretty small compared to the others... you wont lose more than a few grams in the long run.

When a cutting is taken, the bud sites lower on the cut branch are stimulated by growth hormones to generate new growth. I take cuttings from near the top of the plant because they have the most vigor and chance for success. Cutting a top makes the lower bud sites develop and become the new tops. I take all my cutings from mother plants. I occasionally have to whack the mothers down to mere stubs of branches with a few little leaves left in order to have enough space in my grow room.

The plants bush out and grow very full. You are actually pruning your plant when you take a cutting to root. Look at the branch structure of your plant and find a branch that you want to take a cutting from. Then look at the bud sites along the branch. Some bud sites point toward the center of the pot, some away, and some to the sides. I cut just above a bud site (node) that is pointing away from the center of the pot. Once the cutting is removed, the bud site will grow a new top , and it will grow out away from the center of the pot. The end result is a fuller wider plant, with fewer jumbled, crossed, competing branches in the center of the plant. Most of my mothers are kept for 6-9 months and they offer several generations of clones in that time span. Then they go to flower and I choose the healthiest clone of the same strain as my new mother.

If you can get a space for vegging, your cloning efforts will be much more manageable. Then you won't be in an "all or none" bind trying to decide to take cuttings or not. Clone & veg on one light, flower on the other. See how this hobby can get a bit more expensive?
