So the results are in. My experiment to determine whether a clone with the bottom bit shaved roots faster than an unshaved clone has ended. I did this little experiment to see if maybe cleaning the stem would 'shave' a day off my cloning time. The following clones were taken on August 4th: 10 - 6" clones from strain 'Black Domina' into Rapid Rooters (RR) I split them into two groups of five. One group had the bottom half inch (1.25cm) cleaned off with the razor. The cutting was dipped into rooting hormone and put into a RR plug. The second group was cut at an angle, dipped in rooting hormone and placed into RR plugs. Each plug was put into a 3" netpot and covered with Hydroton. Both groups were set into cloning trays filled 1/2" with water and a soaker hose was added to aerate the water. The groups were about 4" away from a single 4' floro. On August 8th, root bumps were observed on most clones. On August 12th, roots were finally reaching out of the netpot on 2 of the shaved clones and three of the unshaved ones. On August 13th, all clones were removed from the netpots and roots were compared. Of the 5 shaved clones: Two had excellent root formation One had minimal rooting One had a single root protruding from the plug One had no visible roots Of the 5 unshaved clones: Two had excellent root formation Two had good rooting One had a single root protruding So the unshaved clones did slightly better than the shaved ones. But since the difference was so minimal, I cannot say whether any real advantage was gained by shaving or not. More trials with higher numbers of clones would be needed to draw any real conclusions. Since there is no noticable difference: it's gonna be cut, dip and plant for now. Now for the photos.

but I honestly don't think that a straight cut vs 45 deg cut would make a big difference.
