Firstly Mr D, thank you loads and loads for sharing such a valuable bit of information fella.. I'm sure we all appreciate your time.

Could I fire in a few q's before I go and buy the bits?

1. This perlite stuff... Is it reusable? I'm wondering if I could just lift out the rooted clones, top up the perlite to the original level then fill it with cuttings again...

2. Is there anything stopping you/me/us from making the res depth deeper than the 2-ish inches so it will go for longer without top-ups?

I'm gonna try and find bigger containers, so scaling up q's...

3. How far apart are your wicks spaced?

4. How big a surface area do you think your 125w cfl covers? Or put better, what do you think would an ideal wattage per what area?

Thanks again...

DF

U R Very Welcome

1. This perlite stuff... Is it reusable? I'm wondering if I could just lift out the rooted clones, top up the perlite to the original level then fill it with cuttings again...

That's how I do it...... as long as you stay with plain water for misting........otherwise the top of the perilite turns green with algee........which I scrape off and throw away when that batch is done...........

2. Is there anything stopping you/me/us from making the res depth deeper than the 2-ish inches so it will go for longer without top-ups?

I see no problem with this concept, in fact, when I found larger dispans I upgraded to them, size 16" x 12"........ as for res depth buy a 4th dispan and add another spacer then let me know how it works out OK?

3. How far apart are your wicks spaced?
I just placed them so that they were equally spaced out

4. How big a surface area do you think your 125w cfl covers? Or put better, what do you think would an ideal wattage per what area?

Right now I'm trying 4 - 25 watt cfl's 2 blue and 2 red covering a 1' x 2' area which is the same area for the 125w CFL

Thanks again... you humble me with your words, thx for stopping by

DF
hope this helps and I've added some pics of my current set up.......cloner currently has 4 blue mystic, 4 AK-47, and 4 Sour Bubble......

u just put together a system like this and was wondering;

Does the perlite have to completely cover the wick? I have about 1/4" of the wick above the perlite, does this matter?

Also, I have one 25w cfl at 5500k on it 24 hours a day....am i wasting my time? or will this really help out.

Thanks.

Also, I have one 25w cfl at 5500k on it 24 hours a day....am i wasting my time? or will this really help out.I find a cycle of 18/6 works best for rooting........I find that soft light does work best but you might think of adding another 25w lamp

Thanks.
hope this info helps.........good luck and no I don't think you are wasting your time....why might you think this?

I dont have the money or the space to set up better lights, so right now im just using the one 25w cfl, I was just concerned that wouldnt be enough light. I am going to put together a little grow box and use a second light (the same cfl) but for now, i just have the one.

Ill top off the perlite. The containers i used have a lid on them. I cut the two from the bottom off, but left the top lid on, the container is pretty deep so my plan was to shut the lid for the first day or two and slowly start to prop it open a little each day, lowering the humidity. That is the reason i didnt top off the perlite, to save overhead room.

I haven't had a chance to try this cloner on my own girls, (another month till I need my cuttings), but I HAVE tried it out with some sturdy tomatoe plants I started off inside before moving outdoors for this spring. I took 6 cuttings, and ALL of them have roots now and have just been transplanted. It took about 10-12 days (I blame myself for this, I've always been pretty bad at taking cuttings...thick fingers with no finesse). I've always stuck to rockwool cubes and clonex and still had about 50%-80% success rate. I have high, yet reasonable hopes for my own girls, and would just like to give more thanks to daltron.

Propogation has always been the most consistantly annoying, frustrating, and expensive part of my operation, and thanks to his advice, I can stop ordering cubes as well as gel (again, hopefully). Surprised by the 100% success rate, I've actually taken more cuttings from the same tomato plant and placed them in the rockwool cubes with some Clonex....just trying to see if I got EXTREMELY lucky with my first run, even if so, the ease of use as well as the inexpensiveness are still strong points in my book (even if my success rates drop to 80%, I'll still be using this cloning set-up). Many thanks daltron, I've toyed with the idea of making a wick-dip cloner but never really could visualize it, or knew where to start, thanks for doing all the hard work for the rest of us lugs.

Since there are no pics its hard to see exactly what you've done but basically

buy 3 dish pans as seen in pic

Take 1 of the 3 and cut the top off of it..should be 1-2 inchs (enough so when the 3 are put together it looks like you have 3 complete pans but there are only 2 complete pans with the top of a third pan as a spacer in the middle

Get 8 1/8th inch fiberglass tiki torch wicks
1/8" And 1/2" Fiberglass Wicks For Tiki Torches

drill 8 holes evenly spaced and than stick the wicks through the top pan all the way touching the bottom.. they should go about 3/4 way up to the top of the pan

fill with perilite to the top of the wicks..

and done?

hey mysticls , yep you got it the first time you fill the res with water let it set for 12 to 24 hours then refill the res, now all the perilite will be wet to the touch and you are ready to plant.......

yo lobo thanks for all the kind words, sorry for the late responce......... that is one of the nice things about this system... as long as you are not in a hurry ......... everything will root , given enough time

what's really great is that I never worry about cloneing any more plus I too also use this system for my veggy garden and have great success with string beans and snow peas
