is this at all possible? or will it cause the plant to fall over once the stem gets to large for the zip tie?

You can do that to the plant no problem, unless it's going to be a mother plant the stem won't get TOO huge, and plants are very good at adapting to things like that. I also wouldn't do it too tight, since you can adjust the stake a bit also.

I'd put the tie on loosely so the stem can grow in girth without being cut.

Yup, what cheese said.

I introduced some supercropping that way in my first grow. It healed but I had to put a pressure bandage on it for a week until it did so.

Everything is quick release now.

And don't do what I did my first time with LST... i had strings all over the place tied to stems, pulling them down. Plant grows vertical... and well, I almost LST'd a main secondary branch as well it was hanging 1/2 off the main stem.

Better to LST side branches with quick release self made xmas style weights (paper clip, tape and quarter(s)) - or something that is not semi permanent.

I would use kite string. cheap, and you get alot of it . $2 for like 60 ft of it . you can find it at the hardware store. its soft, and made of cotton so it wont cut into stems. my two cents
