How stressful is topping to a plant? My babies are almost 4 weeks old right now and they're taking off past their 5th node and beginning to show secondary growth. I want to top them but I'm hesitant about stressing them and having them possibly come out male.

I'd do it in a heartbeat temp and nutes are the stresses to worry about ![]() a happy healthy plant isn't going to mind if you have other stress in it's life we need to have an intervention

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I agree with underarock. There is no problem at all with topping. However, it will stress the plant and it may take a few days for it to start showing rapid growth again. The other approach, which I believe is less stressful, is to FIM. The idea is that this does the same thing as topping with less stress. I have tried both approaches and now I FIM whenever I can, reserving topping for mothers, or particular situations where it makes sense. Here are some FIM links http://www.gardenscure.com/420/train...-pics-fim.html How-To : Fimming and Topping made Easy - Grasscity.com Forums Hope this helps. Peace.

The reason is b/c if it is an Indica that is a stout plant or you have plenty of vertical space for growth, topping may not be necessary. Another thing worth noting is topping will slow growth for a short while before re-distributing the hormones and beginning the more compact and thick growth you may desire. You are less likely to cause it to hermie, more likely to stun growth. IMO you need to allow the plant to recover from a topping for a week or more before moving to flower, in other words if timing is an issue, you may not want to top. With all that said, most of the genetics I work with do like to be topped, I am growing Sativa dominant MJ now, and I allow it to veg for 2-3 weeks after topping. I do some bottom pruning in that time, but not too much.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | topping is all good they will take time to recover-- but just do it or if you want to clone the best parts of each plant you might let them grow to 7 or 9 nodes and root the longer tops... LST could be used meantime to minimize height and bush out the lower sections LST will also slow the top growth a bit but it will recover faster from the topping![]() P3n

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | yeah it just depends on the strain. because if the stems are too stiff, they might break if you try to LST. topping stress depends on strain too.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Good morning, I just added to a thread about topping a plant to keep "Only" as a Mother as it retains the "bloodline" if you will of the genetics to that particular plant, which leads to a better mother. While lower branched cuttings are better for just quick flowerng sessions as their may be variences from clone to clone. It doesn't matter weather someone cuts a leaf they think blocks light to a flower below, or take a cutting from the lower portion as a clone or cut the top of a plant to use as a mother, stress is stress IMHO, it just doesn't matter as the plant sees it as damage and slows overall growth to repair said area. If your limited in height to grow tall trees learn a training method such as LST from the links here at the Garden or one of many other techniques to grow. Whatever you decided someone is here to help you. Have a Great day, stay dry & spend time in the your sandbox don | ||

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | So I topped my largest girl today. I cut her right above her 2nd node. I've read somewhere that if you have a cola dominant plant and top above the 2nd node you can create 4 dominant colas. I felt so bad when I took the razor to her ![]()
