how to keep plants short
permalink

from what i read in the grow guide it doesnt seem possible to tell how tall my plants will get once they start growing. my problem is that my space for growing is 3.6 feet in height. am i screwed do i need to rethink my plan or can i grow anything in there. what can i do to grow short fat plants as opposed to tall ones. i know im not dealing with ideal conditions, but any suggestions you can give would be appreciated. also im going for 4 plants and hope to be buying a 400w hps, will that be too much. rough dimensions of entire enclosure are 5ft wide, 3 ft deep, and 3.5 ft high.

First is that 3.5 ft tall already considering room for your light? I hope it is because other wise you will need much more height espescially if you go with HPS or MH lights. Smokinrav, I believe, regularly grows plants that do not exceed 3.5 ft in height. He does this with a combination of topping and training.

Go to the search button and enter Plants AND tieing. Then you will have to enter it again on another screen, atleast I do. Look for for smokinrav's grow journal called "Smokinrav has good genetics!" I just got done reading it. That will tell you all you need to know. That is truely a great thead.

I am so envious of so many people on this site and one day hope to help fill in the shoes of many great people and growers here.

Just a thought, you could turn the enclosure on its side so its 5 feet tall. You would have enough room for a plant and light that way.

Disregard the topping...

I just found out that smokinrav no longer uses this method. Try training though.

Good Luck.

your best bet would be to read up on "Supercropping", "Sog", and "Scrog". Do your homework and you just may pull it off.

...I think you can do it.

lilwilleezy.

I think it can be done with a 400hps. I use a 430hps, and have two White Widow's that are a little over two feet tall, and are in pots which are 1' tall. That would leave just about no room for your light, BUT, I could have trained them even more (I SoG'd 'em) and fit them into the space you're talking about. I would look for 400hps hoods that aren't very tall, and use pots that are more wide than tall.

Furthermore, I also have 3 Top44 that are less than two feet tall and won't get taller, so find a strain that doesn't grow too tall. I would definitely work out every option with the 400hps before giving in and settling for floros. No offense to the floro guys, but if you can do HID, then go for it.
