art alexander is beginning to sprout.

I have a very height-limited space, and four 50W HPS in a 3 sq ft area and have found that leaves can get pretty close to the light without damage -- up to 4" from the light is my personal limit.

I'm growing from seed, but my theory is that with my lighting situation SCROG will be perfect. Instead of one really bright light source I have four lights which distributes the brightness across a broader area.

The other aspect of my setup is that I have the lights mounted to the "ceiling" of my grow space. I can't move the lights -- only the plants and the netting. But obviously after the screen is in place it will be hard to move it. So my question is, how much space should I allow for buds? How far away from the lights should I mount the screen?

the space for the buds is the whole screen, and if your personal limit from the light is 4" then put the net 4" from the light, if you want to try to get it even closer you could try that, just be very careful. since your starting off from seed and the plants will need to be close to the light and the light is not moveable all you have to do is prop the pots up towards the light with milk crates, or big books, cinder bricks, or anything you can find around the house really then just lower the plants as the get bigger!

Hmm. OK, all the pics I've seen of scrog setups have the colas growing above the screen...

when growing scrog, most ppl only let the plant grow about a foot vertically then top, weave the 2 tips through the screen w/ multiple plants.. the undergrowth will be pretty much baren so vertical space isnt too important, bud space is.
since you have a light distance of 4" just add that to the space you think your plants will grow vertically between weaves.. so around 6" maybe, allow it to grow 2" per day.. if possible, set an eye hook in a ceiling stud so you can adjust the height of your lamp when it comes time to flower so your buds will be nice and compact..
