When is it good to top a plant? How tall should they be... and what are the affects depending on the size? Anyone know, thanks in advance..

I would not top your plants. If you want to increase your plants production, try one of the low stress training methods. Otherwise, removing your plants grow tips could cause stress that may result in a hermie. There are better ways.

My 2 cents...

It's a personal preference thing. Some growers top after the 2nd node, or 3rd node, or 4th node or 2nd and 5th node.

It is generally best to top earlier in the vegetative part of your grow.

Do a search for topping and you can see what different folk are doing.

Good growing,
Plains

Have done some searches...

I tried reading things off several sites about topping, but none of them give a clear idea of what happens if you top the plant and when you should or shouldn't do it...
If I top the plant after the second node and fifth node what will happen?.. that's basically my question.. if it is going to dramatically decrease the amount of output from the plant then I don't wanna do that, but if it would help it anyway.. or speed it up?

You will end up with 4 "main" grow tips.

Topping in my opinion slows down your grow time due to several factors.
1. If the plant is "shocked" or needs time to adjust.
2. I believe you veg longer to get the grow tips to comparable size of untopped grow tips.
3. I don't know.

If topping more than once, again in my opinion, combining that with training to encourage secondary growth would be the best option.

Bottom lining it, if you have the patience to extend your grow and maximize the effects of topping/training, yes I believe it will increase your yield. If you top too much or get impatient (or pick a strain that doesn't like being topped), it will decrease it.

Here is a good thread that will help you understand it a bit better.
Found in the library (link in my signature), in the training forum.

I have five girls under flos about errrrr well not far from harvest. Four were LSTed of sorts one was topped and LSTed. The topped plant is shorter with shorter buds ie she needed to be vegged longer than the solely LSTed girls ala Plains earlier reply. Personally I will not be topping again.

Thank you plains.. I read over that whole thing and all those posts and got a good idea of how to use that method lilbud was talking about.. even though the pictures no longer load.
as of right now I think we have about 8 or 9 plants coming up.. of which we need to move now.. some bigger than others, so i may try this method with a couple of them and leave a couple of them and see how it turns out.
