Hello all, I have a clone that is about 7 inches tall and I was wanting to top her, she is almost pure sativa and her mom is streching like a mother, so just exactly how do I top? Do I just cut off the top node or two with sissors? also since she is a clone and allready has alternating internodes will topping be effective?, thanks so much for the help, still learning alot on these forums everyday.

![]() | I have no experience with topping, but I know a lot of folks here train there girls....myself included. Do a search for LST or go to the Advanced Techniques forum to learn more.

![]() | Thanks for the reply's, not really, but topping I heard is simpler and if you also top side branches you can end up with a "beach ball" plant + it seems easier, I will check ur links though and thanks again. btw though, how do you top heh

![]() | Talbot, do some serious research before you decide to top your plant. Use the search function and search for topping and LST. There is 1 particular thread I remember reading that had some really good info as to why you shouldn't top and why you should use the LST technique. Basically topping takes away from your plant. I know I know.. "but 2 tops come from where the 1 was" ... If you find the post I was referring to you'll come to understand my position. Look through the "Grow Journals" forum and concentrate on grows where people used the LST or SoG technique. You'll definitley get a higher yield if you train your plant rather than top it. Yes, topping may be easier but IMO, with only 1 plant, you should definitley go for the biggest yield possible. Plus, you'll learn a valuable growing technique, and I've heard it's great fun! ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | sometimes you guys..topping ain't so bad. if you've never tried it, maybe you should. just snip the very tippy top leaves with scissors. you don't have to cut 2 nodes or 1 node or anything. just the tippy top of the growth shoot/the top, unless you are planning on cloning the cutting. then you'd want around 4 inches or more, of course. i cut as little as possible though usually. if you've never tried it, you might like it, and you just don't even know. i have been getting away from it and going no training, no topping, no fim, no nothing.. but i am partial to topping over lst because i ain't gonna sit around tying my plants no way/. too lazy when topping is less time consuming and works for me

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hey Talbot, I've topped lots of plants, for different reasons. I've used LST too, but since you asked about topping.... Take your cut, just above the desired node. Make a clean cut, close to but not so close as to damage the secondary growth/branch. I don't like to leave a big nub standing there, so I pick a spot where two nodes are fairly close together. Essentially, leaving two tops. Understand?. Topping should probably be considered, a last option, but in some circumstances(mine) it can be just as effective. ![]()

![]() | There are some strains out there that do poorly when topped. Some tend to grow one huge cola and a few side ones. I guess it depends on what you got. I'd go with LST over cutting, since the plant concentrates energy on repair. But of course, if you have the time and patience, go for it. Just my 2 cents...
