For my garden I use a huge carbon filter with an 8" vortex fan and it is set up to exhaust through a hole in the wall into the basement.

For my drying closet I have no odor control and need it badly. My question is, since I'd rather not be cutting holes in my closet, can I just mount a 4" fan on top of a small carbon filter and just have it recycle the air in the closet? No ducts, no holes. Just suck stinky air through filter and exhaust scrubbed air right back into closet. Will this work?

yep, thats what i do its not as good though, make sure the room is sealed up tight and maybe have some ona gel near the door or a glade plugin or something.

For the filter and fan I am looking at spending almost $200. So I want it to work good without the need for plug-ins. Maybe I will have to exhaust it. It is possible, just didn't want to. I'll give it a go without exhausting it, but if I have to I can/will cut a hole through the closet wall and into a cabinet on the other side.

I use the Growzonator.
I got the small one because i'm small time.
I just grow a little for personal medical.

It just hangs there and makes everything smell like nothing.
Not sure how, but it works.

Qfe...when you're only circulating rather than exhausting you don't have the added benefit of being able to have negative pressure workin' for ya. Make sure she's sealed well!
