Huh, I read those 2 linked threads, I have no idea if that kid was for real or not, but do rick's answers pertaining to HC.com still apply to GC? Not computer savvy enough to understand the difference between logging and "capturing" IP addresses, but based on what I've seen of banned and rebanned ( we won't mention any names ) members, it seems IP addresses must be recorded/stored? It wasn't in the thread linked here, but in another, rick explained how they could be dumped if he was served with a warrant? Sounds good on paper. Also, just curious, once a member was established, could they request their email address be deleted? I'm not exactly Mr Security, myself, but I am a curious SOB.

Admins can see IPs if we are looking for them. IPs are not logged. They are not stored. I can see them when a member is online but I have to go to a password protected Admin Control Panel to do that.

An email address can be deleted but if you forget a password you are screwed because a new password will be sent to the email address that was first registered.

If your are really worried about your ip address being discovered by the feds, then you can use an anonymous proxy server to hide it, just type in anonymous proxy server in a google search and a bunch of them will show up, what they do is allow you to use their proxy servers to access any site you want to go to, thereby masking your ip address with thiers, there are also programs like hidemyip and steganos internet anonym wich will bounce you thru as many diffrent proxy servers as you like, its called proxy chain, and pretty friggin hard to trace, if at all. the only problem is it will slow down your internet connection, but you can turn it on or off with the click of a mouse when you don't need to be using it. Also there are other progs wich can change your mac address, wich is an address stored on the chip in your network card, most people don't know about that. Even if you hide your ip your mac address is still open because it tells the sending computer where to send the information to, although you can't pinpoint someones location from thier mac address, only thier ip, but if the feds or whoever found you somehow, they could get your mac address off your computer and be able to verify that it was the computer used to do whatever they are accusing you off, you'de pretty much have to be a terrorist or someone trying to hack into banks in order for them to go to that amount of trouble.

An ip address masker should be plenty good enough if your just trying to protect your identity while using the internet.

Logging is when a server stores the IP address of the originating packets...
Capturing is when a third party 'sniffing' application is uses to discover packets sent on their domain only.. IOW I cannot sniff your traffic or capture your IP unless we were on the same network (gateway)..

-- There is a hell-uva lot of trouble one needs to go through to subpoena an ISPs logs. It is almost a dirty thing for a state/province to do because of peoples assumption to privacy online.. I doubt there will ever be any logs brought to court unless of something major like a child-porn sting or something like that; Where the majority of citizens will agree with the in peoples privacy..
-- If your nervous about signing up with e-mail addresses then you can sign up with hushmail.com where everything is encrypted.. And the server is off shore..

Im not sure why people are so freaked out about posting information online.. OK granted you dont send info with your RN and address or anything like that.. You'll be fine.. The ONLY way you are going to get busted and it has everything to do with what you say and do outside of the internet.. We are talking about real life here..
