Mary Jane Clipping nails to check covered windows..

Ok, so I'm one that has a regular bedroom window in a grow room. I've always worried at times if something in behind all the layers of stuff I have up to keep the light out, has fallen, or any type of security leak.

Well for me, I'd be pretty obvious to go out there and stare at the window, well not that bad, but everytime I do it, I wonder if someone is watching me.

So today I'm going outside to clip my nails, always do that now so I don't have to pick them up, well decided to do it by my window, and would clip a nail and kind of look up at the window, then the next nail, and another look at the window.

I thought the idea was good, so decided to share it.

All was fine and in place still, I have black cardboard up as the very outside against the window, and cardboard over that, then a curtain with mylar on top of it, from the inside all I see is the mylar.

Happy Growing

you could also plant something non mj near the window, that would give you a reason to tend to it and looking at the window wouldn't seem suspicious at all. the key is to give yourself something normal to do in front of the window, be it clipping nails, or tending to yard work or anything else that might seem innocuous. .

Smile Windows/air/no-light

Hi Alleycat,

Luigee here.... Your post about not looking suspicious when looking at your window from the outside "rang true to my heart".... I'm in a quandary... I want the air from the outside, but don't want the light to be seen as some "beacon" from afar.... How does one get air from a window without the room appearing suspect from the outside? I have black-out curtains part of the way down and a window fan (double 9" fans). When looking from the outside, it's pretty bright.... only shining through where the fans are located. I don't want to close this area off, as I'm not sure where I would get fresh air without doing some major home renovation. If you or anyone has any thoughts on the subject, I'm all ears... Thanks! Luigee

hey luigee-
go to a big box harware store with measurements of your fan, and see what you can come up with that fits over it (think sheet metal, duct tape, maybe a couple of screws if ya happen to have a knack for that sort of thing...). whatever ya use, make sure you can get some elbows that fit it. paint the inside of everything black (use flat paint), and attach the elbows so that they block the light from hitting the fan directly. it might work best to attatch 2 elbows together and make a seriously indirect path.
make sure ya paint the inside of everything very well, as that sheet metal will reflect whatever light gets in there. you want the black paint to eat that light up.
it may take a bit of patience to come up with something that will work, but it will work pretty well (it's what i had setup behind big rectangular openings in my grow room. no real light leaks to speak of, and plenty of air...).

peace-

Nice thread alley and thanks for sharing your method of blocking out your window ect.

As you know I recently moved my grow to an entire bedroom as well so this thread really hits home with some of the things I've been trying to do.

Heres my situation.

The flower room (the bedroom part) which has a large window in it. We used two layers of thick black tarping to cover the window completely and this has worked for stopping all light from leaking but allows for no venting.

I got another small window above the shower. This is completely open and shows light coming out the room which could be busty however MH light is actually going out of there so it looks pretty normal. I was thinking of venting in and out of this tiny window. I would tarp the window completey with two layers, then cut two 6'' ciruclar holes in the tarping to place the ducting in. The ducting would be spray painted black inside and out of coarse. From there I would seal the light leaks from where the ducting meets the tarping.
