In my opinion, it is safer to shop at the grow store, for those conspicuous items, than anywhere else. At least, at the specialty store, you can play it off like you are "growing strawberries" if you are forced to give an excuse. The guy at home depot (or your local hardware store) always asks "what's it for?" while eyeballing you with that suspicious glare. Even the electrical supply stores might ask what the 1KW bulbs are for

At the hydro store ... no one will ever ask what you're growing ... unless you come in looking for advice. And even then, at every store I have been into, IT'S OK TO TALK ABOUT IT ... AS LONG AS YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT *IT*! I have come into stores with pests stuffed into baggies, nute issues, heat issues ... and they always give me the right answers, and the right products, without asking what plant(s) I have in the garden THEY KNOW HOW TO KEEP THE DOORS OPEN!

Reminds me of a particular visit though ... hydro stores do have their scary moments ... if you have my luck

Years back, about 6 or 7, I was in my usual store doing the quarterly shopping. The standard list was ... a full reload of nutes (3 x 4L bottles, 2 x 1L bottles, 500g of powdered bloom booster), another slab of rockwool, a huge bag of LECA, 16 x 4" baskets, and 8 air stones. All of this stuff was on the front counter and the fella's were just starting to ring the items though the computer when I realized I had forgot to grab some new airline. So ... off to the rear of the store went to cut myself 25' of black airline.

On my way to the back of the store... I heard the familiar "bing" of the door chime announcing the presence of another customer. I diligently cut my airline off the big roll after watching the counter hit 25 feet. Wrapped a little tape around the coiled ends and I went back to the front. Rounding the corner I announced "glad I remembered this" while waving the airline in the air like it was a trophy. As I looked up ... I saw the familiar shine of cop boots standing in front of the counter. Looking up further, I see that the cop is standing there giving me the *stink eye* ... I pay him no heed and head right for my items.

I am standing shoulder to shoulder with the officer as the clerk is ringing up the last of my items. The clerk gives me the total ... and as I am handing him the cash ... and the other clerk is bagging my purchase ... the officer's partner pipes up from across the store (didn't know he was there) and asks sternly "What are you going to do with al that?". In the two seconds, that felt like an eternity, it took me to search for answer ... the store owner comes out of the back to save the day!

"I bet he's planning on using those for gardening!" he says with an ear to ear, warm and friendly smile ... he was looking right at me while he said it He pats me on the shoulder on his way between me and the officer and asks me "did you find everything you needed?" :-) I smiled and nodded silently. With my purchase complete ... and receipt in hand ... I promptly left the store and made good my escape before they could come out and check my plates

On a later visit, I asked why they were there that day. A large grow had been busted in my city and a lot of the grow gear still had price tags on it from his store So ... he got a knock and talk too ;p "It didn't look suspicious to you when they bought 8 lights and 6 tables?" ... his response: "No." ... with that same friendly, disarming smile I love my hydro store

Not only would they never say anything at a hydro store ... but it is in their best interests to protect you. It's the perfect mutual understanding

I was at the hydro store Saturday, bought 200 liters of hydroton, guy asked me "you growing tomatoes with that?" "Ummm, yeah" "Get any tomatos yet?" "Ummm, no" He gave me a big handful of hydroponic tomatos! Not sure if he was bustin' my chops or serious, good tomatoes, though.

I know this to be a bad idea in Colombia Mo.... Not the store folks but pry'in eyes outside....
Granted this was not the only factor of a bad situation but that is where suspicion was first stir'd with an out of state plate and the fuzz followed the trail from there

A friend of friends is about all i can say publically. Was a recent situation and word is, the individual is gona be fine all said and done because of issues with the trail they followed to git there but it did all start with observation of customers...
I do want to also point out that this is the First time i have ever known of this type thing... i Don't want everybody freak'in over their store but let it be known their are some task force zealots in conservative rural America that don't play fair.

I lived in Columbia for a few years, Smoked some of the best blueberry,crippler etc... Loved the Flat Branch Brewery and all the hiking trails.... I live just north of KC now.
I have heard that the cops have started hydro shops just to track the credit cards and follow those who pay with cash...... IF YOUR GONNA BUY CRAP SEND A FRIEND WITH A LIST I SWEAR .... These cops are way more deceiving and treacherous than we could ever think to be... What could you expect in a college town.... Least they have decriminalized it somewhat

Bottom line is the Cops(LEO) need a search warrant to come into your house...

W/O a warrant you tell them to go Fuck themselves!! & dont take one step outside of your house, just close the door & speak through your door... When they try thier scare tactics tell them to have thier dispatch call you and you will speak to them that way.

They cannot prove you ordered the seeds if they are in different name. Anybody could write a name down and have a order sent to what-ever name & address you want.

The last seed order I recieved was in my Dog's name sent to my safe address location. I sure hope they dont take my dog.

Get busted by a knock-n-talk?? No Fuckin Way!!!! People need to learn how to say no to LEO.

Of course if you sell, brag, talk, show people, the odds are against you.

This is turning out to be a good thread.

Serenity- you echo my thoughts. I was thinking of renting a car for the day I buy everything at the store. Your right, whats a couple more bucks for a piece of mind. Because once everything is in my house. No smell, no word, no bud, nothing will leave it. So doing it right from the start is best.

Burn-z- Your right. We do still have some rights as a public, as it were. We do need to know them because it could save us from a bust. Selling is bad (in my opinion), bragging is stupid, and even our best friends don't need to know what we do. It's enough we smoke them out every time we see them with the finest of bud. Loose lips really do sink ships, it's not just a clever statement.

... try to see if you can trade off your vehicle for an unsuspecting friend's for the day. Rental receipts can just as easily to be traced back to you, or the Mrs Unless, you get a friend to rent the vehicle for you.

And ... it's not like you are using his/her wheels to break the law ... just deflecting the law in the wrong direction If you have any friends that are the non-growing/non-smoking type ... then, truly, no harm - no foul

I don't bother ... but I don't live in the U.S.
