![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I alway hung mine on chains with the chains bolted to studs with those rubber mounts probably similar to what the doctor was talking about. had no to little problem with noise. only if you were right next to the entrance. and a sound proof box isn't that hard, just kind of costly, and it's never really sound proof because it still has vent openings, so fully sound proof is not even feasible, plus the problem with over heating. egg crate every open spot you can in your room, and even behind your mylar or white plastic. that makes a very big difference for outside noise. make sure the egg crate part is facing you. egg crate foam is cheap, and you can use a stapler to put it up.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | i do audio and am sensitive to noise.. not knowing much about electricity beyond circuit bending, i spliced a potentiometer to my 8w fan this morning, which was ineffective for reducing fan speed (and burned). my suggestions.. a fan with metal blades won't deform with warm summers.. less deformation means less wobble/unproductive vibration. remove all the housing you can to reduce resonant vibration.. make sure all the parts are secure.. oil the pivot.. even putting something absorbent against a wall to muffle reflections can dramatically effect the amount of noise something creates.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If you were going to slow a motor down like that you'd probably want to use a rheostat instead of a potentimeter. However, it's not a very good idea. I've heard of people using triac speed throttles for permanent split capacitor motors and shaded pole motors. Split phase motors and capacitor start motors will just burn out the triac if you try to throttle them that way. For split phase and cap starts you'll need a motor speed controller. They really don't like being slowed down. ![]() Just remember that light dimmers are for dimming lights, not motors. You could wind up with an electrical fire if you use them for things OTHER than lights.

![]() ![]() | wadding. its kinda like the stuff u pull out of pillows. You can buy good quality wadding from pro yamaha etc etc. it is used for silancing the exhaust. or go to an art shop they will have it proberly for $15 cheaper too :P take a strip and place it on the back side of the fan. makin sure your not covering the air vent of the fan. tape or tie it their.. Turn on the fan it will silance it at least half of what it was.. it wont over head because the wadding can breath.

![]() ![]() | thanks for the input all. the fan is a can fan. overkill for the room size but i thought a quick air exchange would mean less fan time so less noise. but it is very loud. the fan itself. i'll need to do some serious figuring on this. rather not alert neighbors with a weird loud fan sound.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | jda I'd just start taking it apart and greasing everything that moves with a high velocity grease. same grease they use for the CV joints on a car. you can usually go by a mechanic shop and ask them for an empty tube, or just a spoonful of it if they have it in bulk. just be straigh with em, say you need to grease up a fan, but you didn't want to buy a whole tube when you only need a spoonful. they'll hook you up, I'm almost sure. good luck

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | i had intended to mount my fan on rubber, but plan changed. i got a 2 speed, 15cm desk fan, on a triangular ' angle adjustment' base. when i took the base off i was left with just the cord, fan and cage. i threaded a rope through the base bolt hole at back of cage, strung the rope over the top of the garden so fan is suspended in mid air. by moving fan along rope and / or, changing the rope anchor points, i can change 'wind direction'. it is dead silent. does not take up any growing space. wrapped nigel

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I like that idea a lot, i have tower fans and they blow hard when they pass, even on low, I get wind burn on my ladies when I leave em for a few days. Moving them around means a lot of wire moving for safety issues plus the area the fan's in is the longest distance away from the plants already, closer would just mean more burn. I could move the fan every coupla days and plus it makes it more quiet, I'm off to take a fan apart. But first... Also, I have another fan that whistles high pitched, anyone know why that happens, need lube? air flow blocked? Thanks everyone and jda21, I'd hang and get the correct speed controller. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If you want to slow down the fan ... go to any hardware store and Buy a fan speed controller for a cieling fan... I've been using them on my fans for years and have never burnt one out...Right now I have a 12" vortex Isolate the fan from the room with bungie cords or rubber... If it's air noise.. A duct muffler is really easy to make
