plus you hafta consider the fact most people are scared of large dogs they are unfamiliar with. so if i a thief knows you have one in the house more than likely they will pick an easier house to rob.
My point though, is that they are still deterrants and/or alarm system and not actual safety precautions. A dog might attack an intruder, but it may get its ribs broken, neck snapped, lick the intruder, or just cower in fear. I'm not saying dogs aren't great as deterrents and alarm systems, all I want to point out is that expecting anything more than that is naive, even w/ a trained dog. Unless put into that situation you just cannot know how your dog is going to react.

Secondly, is this notion that Schutzhund training is the same as attack training. It is not. To a dog schutzhund training is a game and the sleeve is necessary for the game. 95% of dogs that complete this type of training won't play the game unless the sleeve is involved. Don't know about you, but most robbers I know don't rob houses w/ schutzhund sleeves.

Dogs are great companions, good deterrants, and ok alarm systems. Asking anything more from them however is asking a lot. There are hundreds of stories of Rottweilers running away while their owner was beaten and raped, cowering in the corner when a robber kicked them as hard as they can in the ribs, or simply being poisoned, shot, or killed in another way before the robbing takes place. Just my , I don't like guns, but would suggest a gun for protection over an 'aggressive' dog any day.

FWIW this thread did make me think about my security a little more so I got pepper spray for beside our bed and another in the bathroom, just in case the dogs and fake signs don't deter enough.
I never said that a dog would be better than a gun at stopping a robbery in progress. I said they are better for deterring a robbery from ever happening, and that growers shouldn't have guns at the grow location for said reasons. Having a well trained dog is much much better than an abused rescue dog who will indeed cower in the corner if a robber was threatening them. Temperament can vary vastly even among the same breed, among the same litter. I know schutzhund is very different than attack training, and thats why its good. It creates a well-adjusted family protection dog that is even safe around children.

Having a true attack dog is a huge liability and could possibly invite the cops to your place when it attacked your friendly neighbor for the wrong reasons. Schutzhund dogs are trained to make their own judgement calls based on their perceived threat. And believe me, if they were properly trained, and their owner was truely threatened. They'd attack. Sleeve or not. Dogs arn't stupid, nor will they cower unless they've been abused and screwed up from puppyhood. Which saldy, is the state of many dogs these days.

Nah... guns arent cool. they kill. and cause more trouble than they're worth. I guess a empty gun is cool for threats, and defending, but in the end the cops find your gun and check your house, and bam! your grow room is torn down and your a jailbird.

Guns aren't supposed to be cool they are a tool for hunting or for personal protection, guns are more trouble than they are worth if you have no use for them.

Over here in AUS if you have a license for a firearm you are legally required to install an appropriate gun safe before purchase, the police have the right to come and check the safe at any time so its not a good idea to get a gun if you are growing at home.

very much..... And all made very good points on both sides

I do own guns and except the fact that if i may be so dumb as to give away my grow (get caught), i loose all rights to own , posses and so forth,,, But i am a hunter, as well as a gardener,,, i enjoy experimenting the most,,, but as much as weed is a part of me so is the woods and my right to bare arms to hunt for food (My family depends on hunting season),,, heaven forbid they ever do catch me with my grow,,, Lets just hope for the best and except the worst, and thats what i do.....

Also were we live we have reduced crime with a state law called the "Make my day" law, and it states, no matter what reason, if you enter my premises uninvited,,, i could so choose to take your life...... Thats the best deturrant ive seen yet

Great thread,,, many different views,,, its the best thread ive read in a while,,,

Sometimes spelling counts.

But what if we had bear arms?

Should we get on board?
