Insurance Inspection
permalink

We are switching home insurance policies. It's been a long time since I've had an insurance droid come through our building and I'm trying to remember how thoroughly they inspect the premises. My very modest grow is in the basement, well placed behind a plywood door that can easily pass for a wall. It's got stuff hanging on it, etc. I'm thinking I can just stack a bunch of crap in front of it and that'll be that. They are obviously not conducting a full scale search and aren't looking for illegal operations. But...I was wondering what others' experiences may have been, if any...

Hopefully, they will come at the end of the month and the main grow will be finito so this'll just be a theoretical question.

I went thru one of those when I was just starting in soil. I tore down and put the plants out in my truck, (it was winter) after warming it up good. The guy just looked at the electrical panel and furnace, but I imagine it would depend on the guy and the individual inspector. I would be safe and assume he will look at everything.

Ack! That's really scary...What all did they go through? Closets? Cupboards? Drawers? Count teeth fillings and crowns? My secret garden is in a room that is gonna be filled with mountains of storage junk. Hopefully, they will be dispirited and daunted by that point. My secret weapon is to bore whoever I want with constant inane chatter. If you think my posts are long?!? You should hear my speed raps after a few too many shots of espresso!

I've heard mixed stories as you're seeing now.. if I were you I'd prepare for the worst and hope for the best! You could always rent a uhaul for the day and hide 'em there.. though honestly if your grow room is pretty stealthy already I could see that 'stack a bunch of crap in front' idea working just fine.

Yeah...I'm at a delicate phase, Japhy. I think I will roll the dice and count upon my unctuous good will and camouflage of lawabiding cluelessness to get me through. Even if I move the plants, deconstructing the grow room which is quite stealthy, would be VERY problematic. Thanks for your thoughts (and yr really eerie avatar!) BTW, I remember the Yabyum scene from Dharma Bums quite clearly...one of my favorite books. And Gary Snyder is a true hero and major influence.

He did look in cupboards and closets, mainly checking outlets, lights, looking for water damage ect. I did fill my grow room with junk to mak it look like storage, he opened the door but when he saw shit piled up he wasnt interested. So my best advice is if your odor control is good and the room has a bunch of shit in front of it they arent gonna wanna have it moved. I had to take down some ductwork which sucked but Im still growing so I guess it was worth it.

Good luck let us know ho it works out.

Hey Mayan, I just switched from state farm to farmers, and the farmer inspector came looked at the water heater, circuit breakers, kitchen, and the main bathroom. He spent maybe 5 minutes to look, take pictures, and say goodbye.

I ran the dryer in my garage to muffle the fan. I'm a "legal grower" but I like to keep it somewhat stealthy, for times like these.

If I were you, I'd stay on the safe side. Good luck

Yes...I'll definitely be running a washing machine and a dryer to pull their attention from the aberrant white noise which is coming from the unlikely area in the basement.

Drat! If it ain't one thing (nutes/watering/lighting/when to harvest, etc. etc. etc.) it's another. Hopefully, as I said, this will happen after my grow is down and then it'll just be a matter of moving bags or whatever around. If not, I guess I'll grin and bear it and try to make the room leading to the Secret of Secrets as unappetizing as possible.
