Hey Chillyhead, mind if I ask some questions too? I'm looking for a filter for an area roughly the same size.

Anyone know what makes the 38 Special line of can filters different from the regular line of can filters?

Since carbon filters work off of how much surface area one uses, I was going by the amount of surface area each filter has since it seems that all of these filters have a 2" thick bed of carbon in them. I think the formula for surface area on the round part (not the ends) of a cylinder is circumfrence (2pi*r) x height, right?

So, the 33 has 42lbs of carbon in it and is 12 x 13 so (6.28 * 6) * 13 = 490 sq. inches of surface area.
The can 66 is 31lbs of carbon in it and is 12 x 26 so (6.28 * 6) * 26 = 979 sq. inches of surface area.
And the can 50 is 42lbs of carbon in it and is 16.5 x 19.5 so (6.28 * 8.25) * 19.5 = 1,010 sq. inches of surface area.

The filter will be sitting in a plenum that exhausts the air from 2-2x4 cabs but the air will not be exhausted to another area of the house. I'm leaning towards the can 50 because of the amount of carbon and because it has the largest surface area and is only a nominal amount more. Which of those will clean the largest area the best? How loud is the fan that needs to be used with a filter this large? Can I sit 5-8 feet away and not hear it if I am in the same room?

i believe the 38 special is just made for strictly odors?

you CAN NOT sit in the same room as a can fan/vortex/ect. and not hear it. sorry.

i have my grow room in side of a small room. when i open the door to that small room, its annoying. behind the door you cant hear a sound. so id put it in a room you dont use.

38 specials are made so that you have max air movement, the least amount of differential pressure, at the shortest contact time. Supposed to scrub the air just as well as a comparable original scrubber. But the amount of carbon is less, and that contact time kinda scares me. The longer time for that air to mingle with the carbon the better. Can38 - 0.8sec contact time can50-1.0sec... something like that....
Anyways you can get away with a smaller fan with the 38 as well. Id stick to the can 50 or 100 for best price/value i figure.
