Activated Carbon "pre cleaning"
permalink

how do you guys recommend cleaning the dust off your carbon prior to use and cranking the fan on?

i got some 3mm vapor phase activated carbon just wanted some recommendations on how you guys clean it...

i'd assume rinse it out with water and let it sun dry or should i stick it in the oven with the door open? i know carbon dust can cause i nice little boom in a closed oven etc.

you can dry sieve it...but fuckit really.

its just a mess to work with...clean it all you want. as it breaks down from the handling it just creates more dust.

Good morning,

I would think the same way one cleans aquarium activated charcol prior to use in filters, just put in a strainer and hold under running water in the sink???

Unless this type of charcol is something different.

Good luck

if it was marine grade pelletized carbon I'd probably give it a quick rinse with water in a collendar but if its vapor grade granular I'd just go ahead and use it straight as its usually not as dusty... Just dont breath too much when you first turn it on

yes there's a difference. your thinking of liquid phase carbon and im talking about vapor phase carbon.

people always say humidity kills your carbon faster than anything, so i can never understand people rinsing it with water......

one of them has got to be wrong!

the stuffs just nasty, i dont think there is a clean way to work with it. when its wet it drips black funk everywhere {like the yang to perlites yin}

this is a good read (wish i would've found and read this before haha):
Carbon Link Activated Carbons: Activated Carbon for Solvent Recovery - Part 6

quick excerpt:
Dr. Börger, a German scientist, could prove that

* relative humidity rates below 30 pct. will neither reduce the adsorption capacity nor the adsorption time,
* relative humidity rates above 70 pct. substantially reduce the adsorption capacity,
* the humidity of the gas will affect the adsorption capacity much more in case of low toluene concentrations than with high concentrations,
* with toluene concentrations of 10 to 20 g/m3 the negative influence of the humidity is low.

The water content of the activated carbon after desorption may constitute another problem. The purification efficiency of each activated carbon is the better with less water present after desorption. Unfortunately, the desorbed activated carbon in the vicinity of the adsorber walls contains, in many cases, high proportions of water (approx. 10 to 20 pct.). These high water contents are difficult to remove even by hot air drying over longer periods. The wet and poorly-regenerated activated carbons in these zones frequently lead to higher toluene concentrations in the purified air, and this even at the beginning of the adsorption cycle. Some proposals for improvement:

* good insulation of the adsorber walls,
* sufficient pneumatic drying after each regeneration cycle,
* not only the desorption steam but also the drying air shonld be cycledcountercurrently to the direction of the adsorptive stream.
