Holy Moly! I just turned on my 8" Oracle fan in my flower room and it is beyond loud. It first started up slow, and farely quiet and really picked up steam making a sound that could honestly be compared to some type of air craft. I'm begining to worry. I've got to conceal this some how. I have yet to install the insulated ducting which should help some, but how much? My 4" Vortex is much quieter and almost sounds like a fridgerator hum.I was thinking maybe I should get one of those fan controls to lower the speed. A while after unplugging this fan, I could still feel cool air blowing out of it!? Atleast I know it will be doing its job. Any ideas, or advice? Maybe it's the medicine talkin, but I thought this fan would continue to get louder and louder till it launched off my floor. ![]() The box says "Extremely quiet" Haha, I wonder what regular running fans sound like.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | how is the fan mounted? are you suspending it? or is it mounted directly onto a wall, ceiling, etc? things like suspending it with rubber bungees are common ways of getting fans quieter, from the outside, it wont sound that much quieter to you if you stand next to it, but it will reduce the vibrations that is created by the fan, traveling through the frame of a home, apartment, etc. other options not limited to, but including adding a inline whatchamacalit lol, a way to reduce the speed of the fan. that will reduce noise. putting the fan on a timer, is another good way to limit the amount of constant noise. have the fan turn off during the plants "night time" and have it come on only a couple times for a few minutes during that time. you dont need it on 24/7, unless you live in the desert or something. some people have gone so far as to build "sound boxes" for fans. might be an extreme option for you, but something to look into.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The thingamajig whatchamacallit whosit BB referenced is an Inline Fan Controller, sometimes called a fan dimmer switch. Same principle as the dimmers you get at lowe's for lights, but heavy-duty. Get an industrial one for like 20-30 bucks I think. That way the fan only runs at the speed you need, not takeoff. ![]()

How many cfm is your fan? Chances are that 8" fan moves more air than you need it to so putting it on a dimmer is a good idea. You can buy a plug in one or one you have to wire up electrically. Either will work but make sure whatever you buy is rated at a high enough wattage to handle the fan. Those inline fans are about 300 or 400 watts. I suggest the one you wire up as i don't fully trust the plug in one. I can write a DIY for the dial dimmer control if you want.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Thanks for the help, everyone ![]() Well, for starters, last night when I first tried her out she was not mounted to anything, just sitting on the floor. This, I assume, is what added to a lot of the noise. But I planned to run the fan stacked on my CAN100 filter, which is over 3' tall. I will be stacking this filter on a table, which will also be sitting on a styrofoam floor. The fan is at 755 cfm and it's my only extraction fan for my A/C Hood and 3x4x8 space. I oversized so I would have an easier time keeping temps down with my 1kHPS. I may try to construct some type of sound-shell to fit around the fan, some how. Maybe out of some type of tote bucket. I just set up the duct work for my light, it was kind of tricky but I think I got it handled. I am using 8" insulated flexible ducting and I'm glad I went the insulated route. I taped down the inner coil, trimmd back the insulation to size and taped the mylar covering down. Then wrapped it around tightly with duct tape, protecting the joint. It is actually much quieter than my 4" Vortex fan using noninsulated ducting. But a timer and a dimmer that is temperature controlled would be a good idea. If I dont need to run the fan 24/7, than so be it. Just need to contain the stink when it comes that time. With the fan off, won't that allow the stink to escape, since the negative pressure won't be in effect? While I have all your attention, I was wondering if it is really neccessary to lower and raise your HID? With everything in the room, it's an extremely tight fit, so I cut the ducting short. I'm concerned it my rip off if I was forced to lower the light too far. I am using a 1kHPS. With the hood mounted near the top, I'm left with about 6.5-7' of head space. I plan on doing DWC bucket SCRoG which should raise my plants off the floor by 2' or so, plus 1-2month old plants. So how much room will I actually be left with? 3-4'? How far should I be keeping a 1kHPS with A/C hood from the canopy? Max intensity or safe distance?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I would keep it as close as you can without burning/bleaching the plants. If the air cooling is efficient enough, you can get the glass right onto the plants, but most strains will bleach before that from a 1kW. The Inverse Square law is very important when it comes to growing, make sure to pay attention to it!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Inverse Square Law? Thanks Hydrolized. I checked on the rig after posting this, and since I moved the filter over a foot, with the pressure of the fan, the ducting came loose on one side of the hood. I'm going to need to get some type of clamps. I'm just hoping this will be enough, as I've tried zip-ties and they eventually slipped off. I'm running a 1kHPS in a small room. I don't really know how well I will be able to manage the temps yet. I think it's safe to assume that a 1kHPS won't need to be as close to the plants as a 600 or a 400 might need to be, without sacrificing light intensity. The hood I have is designed to direct a concentrated light level directly down on the canopy. If that makes a difference.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | have you tried this: ![]() foil tape. available at most hardware stores. it has really strong adhesion properties. and works well in warmer temps.
