![]() | On a routine traffic stop, is the officer allowed "greet" the traffic offender with his K-9 unit? Or is the presence of a K-9 dog restricted to his vehicle until probable cause has been established? In other words, couldn't the dog be used as an intimidation factor for a person involved in a traffic stop?

![]() | Canine searches are totally legal no matter what. They can walk around your car and sniff. Say you had some weed in the trunk and a passenger door. They would sit down at those 2 spots, and then that would be reason for the cop to search your belongings and smoke YOUR weed. Crazy country so free.

Thanks for your great answers. If the dogs are so effective, I'm surprised they aren't used more often. I would imagine that there is very little overhead in regards to training and keeping those dogs. Good investment for LEO, bad for us.

![]() | Massive overheads. I know for a fact it costs some 10 000USD to train each guide dog. Im sure a police dog would cost even more. I dont believe they could search you, just because the dog smelt something. I mean they smell and get excited over other things right?? How would they know its drugs? Anyone have some facts on the law regarding dogs and searches?

![]() | Trust me what I said were the facts...for instance the ATF their dogs only get food when they find drugs, bombs, or etc. Even when off the job they plant different things just to feed the animal..it seems cruel to me. But all canine searches are legal, and if they alert the officer of something you will be searched.
