![]() ![]() | I've heard and seen of technology whereby the opposite soundwave of an ongoing noise is generated, thusly cancelling the offending sound out. It is used in power transformers to quiet their hum, and similar technology is used in headphones to drown out background noise so that you may listen to your music in peace. I think this would be really helpful technology in the business of stealth growing. Does anybody know what I am talking about? Is it available to the consumer? How much $? Where do I get info? Thank you! dev-ious

![]() | Yes dev-ious, this is correct. This technique is used for car stereo speaker installation among other things. The pitch of the windshield and the interior dimensions of the car, can cause cancellation of certain frequencies of sound. By changing the placement of speakers inside the car, you can manipulate this to a certain extent. It isn't always possible to "move" speakers and things inside of a car's limited interior, hense the reason for an equalizer to balance those frequencies, and avoiding the cancellation. I'm not sure how you would apply this knowlege to growing. Got any ideas that you might want to throw on the table?

![]() ![]() | Dev-ious. There are actually several methods of this and Jibbler alluded to one of the more common. The thing I think you are talking about is called "active noise cancellation". It involves a microphone, a signal processor and a speaker. The mic samples the incoming sound waves, the signal processor "reads" the acoustic signature and predicts the future frequencies, then generates and inverse soundwave and pumps it out the speaker; thereby cancelling up to 95% of the ambient noise. Due to the way it works, the most cancellation effect possible is on a steady, predictable noise source: a fan or ballast hum perhaps? Sudden things (thunder, yelling) don't get cancelled because the processor didn't account for the sound source in time. The technology is relativelynew and I suspect still fairly expensive. TokaJay

![]() | This is also refered to as "White Noise" or a device called a "White Noise Generator". I have read of these being used on a scale as large as a drop-forge! Many times an easy way to decrease noise tremendously is simply to isolate what is creating the noise. If you can hang it, or "suspend" it, bungee cords work great for this. This way the vibrations from the apparatus aren't amplified by contacting surfaces which truly act like a speaker.. ![]()

![]() | Take a look at the product Dynamat. Do a search on the web to get more info but it is generally available at car stereo shops. I have used it to line the inside of a computer with a lot of noisy fans. It and similar are sold under various other names like accumat etc. Very good product, available in rolls and not too expensive. Very cool grow box BTW...

![]() | LordRaven, i'm familiar with Dynamat, I've used in my car years ago. It works as a sound deadening material to drop the overall ambient noise inside the car. In fact, if you search online, they have a "spray" version of the very same product. People found that a cars interior actually has very few smooth surfaces to apply this material. It needs to be cut and resized, but the final surface is paintable. The spray version becomes a sound deadening adhesive that drys on, and provides a very even coat. However, I will say that this product is not cheap. A 10 square foot section will run you $60. ![]() | Like anything it depends on where you buy it and Crutchfield would be the last place I would buy anything with easily the highest overall prices of any online stereo shop. Aside from that you are paying for the dynamat name. There are plenty of equivalent products under various names that can be had even cheaper. They also have a newer dynamat xtreme product which has caused the prices or original to go down some. Just depends on what you want to spend and the desired end product. For that matter if you just wanted to damp a grow box and did not want to spend much cash then I would just buy several cans of rubberized undercoating from the cheapest place possible like Walmart or even cover the box with a heavy naugahyde kind of material.
