Indoor Trip-Sensor Shutoff
permalink

Hello, first time poster, long time lurker.

So if one has a room where, when standing in it and listening just a little attentively, there is a little noise which could be traced to a cabinet, what would be the best security device to realize that the cabinet must be silent when visitors approach? I was theorizing that a trip sensor could catch any movement at the base of a door (hidden of course) and automatically shutting off the cabinet which results in a quiet room.

How would one go about this? I've only seen them work for garage doors.

Motion sensors usually work in the opposite, say if you walk by it picks it up and turns the light ON. You could get one and reverse the circuitry so that it turned the lights off in the presence of motion.

My only concern would be "safe" movement (by you or your cat or whatever) turning off the lights all the time and throwing off the photoperiod.

Maybe it's easier that you just secure the room with your grow so that no one can get in there without your consent. Stranger things have been done.

Hi Idioteque

I seem to remember reading about a member,' Mr Burns' fitting (or at least planning on fitting) a kill switch in another part of the house, i think his was in the bedroom so he could kill everything if anyone entered the area uninvited like.
but this could only be used when someone is at home to flick the switch

your best bet is a pressur plate that they use in shops for setting of buzzers as you walk inside, (you know to tell the staff someone has come in!) they need a least human foot pressure to activate, and as G_H says, just reverse the circuitry, this would prevent a cat of similar activating it accidently. Dunno wher you might get one from tho, maybe a shop fitters. only my hope it helps.

i would have to agree with grass hopper on this one. maybe it would be best to just secure your room. otherwise your going to have to deal with stressing her out by flipping her cycle on and off everytime you get up at night to take a leak lol

I posted a thread on wiring a kill switch. I decided to just run another power strip with a switch on it that is easily accessible in case of an "emergency".

Check out post #6 by grass hopper, IMO wiring a switch to the entire grow would be an easier option. Just my

I go along with making it secure but I have a cheap mans way to shut it off.
Use one of those strips with about 5 or 6 plugs on them.
They usually have an on and off switch for the whole bar.
A quick flip of the switch turns everything off.
Its not automatic but it will accomplish what you want.

You could run a noise machine in your room so no one can hear the cabinet. I have one that does rain, surf, chirping crickets.

You see, the reason I'm aiming specifically for this sensor design or something working in the same lines of intruder detection is because if this were to be put to use, it would be in a remote corner of a house, likely the cellar. Thus, only an intruder would set the motion detector off, for reasons of keeping the corner off any curious radar. I'd like any ideas on how I could bypass it, as I would be the only one who I'd like to enter the area without a kill-switch set off. I've heard of a Home DePot motion detector for houses that lets you set ON or OFF, and a set time for this action.

Hello mate,

The thing about motion sensors, is they work on infrared, sensing a change in heat output. so again a kat or even a rat could set it off. Same as house alarms, little box in corner of room with red light, lights up when you move around the room. very sensitive things.

My earlier post suggested a floor sensor, like whats used in shops,
well we have Electric security gates at the front doors of where i work, these have a counter on them to allow us to monitor footfall, (how many customers we have ). there is a also a sensor above the door that does the same thing and is in someway connected to the gates, as it also houses the FOGHORN type alarm that goes off when scumbags Knick stuff. This is all linked to a pressure pad in the floor too, so if the door is open, we can still be alerted when someone enters.
I just dont know how it all works, but i do know you can turn it on and off with a key, sometimes we have to reset it, and cant find the key, so use the isolation switch in the fuse box.
