I have a few different sizes buddy, they look like this:

There aren't any other types are there?!

I have them on the exhaust side of all my bigger fans, that's how good I think they are. And they don't impede the flow by any noticeable amount.

The intake side of a fan is not as noisy, and I find that about a metre or so of the type of acoustic ducting that has the tiny little holes on the inside (so it acts kinda like a silencer) is enough to kill the noise on the intake.. This stuff:

If you can't fit in a proper silencer, in my experience, around 2 metres of this acoustic/silencing ducting is about the equivilent in noise reduction of a proper silencer. Although the amount of power you'll lose from using 2m of ducting doesn't make it the ideal choice.

Or of course, if we're talking about your room exhaust fan, Phat carbon scrubber, then an acoustic fan, then your silencer with the ducting out is the choice of champions.

Thanks for the advice on this silencer/box fan set up Foxy. I got both at 8 inches. Intake box fan to follow but thanks for the time you've taken.

I've been tinkering with the same noise problem all day myself haha and just happened across this solution, "....also a box with ducting running into both ends, and just a big dead space inside the box". No more blowy sound, only problem now is the hum of the fan itself >< lol guess you cant win em all but I will get it licked sooner or later My design however does not include ducting out the other end, it just spills out thru a hole eventually.

That'd be sweet if you were to post that DIY silencer link.

What you are describing sounds like it is primarily vibration noise from the fan. If you can afford the loss in speed, a dimmer would be nice as someone else mentioned. Also this is always a good design for making motors quiet.

Another simpler option, is to suspend the blower from bungees to the ceiling.

Yes matey, I bought a 1.4m x 100mm one to try it out and it's pretty good. I put a db meter on the end and it was near enough the same noise level on the end as a 1m standard silencer, although to my ear, the noise was also less bass-ey ( ) which is important. Best part is they are soooo light you can just hang them by twist-ties or string.

I've also just bought one of those fabric looking carbon scrubbers, can't wait to see how that works... lugging around and disposing of full size scrubbers is a total arse-ache...
