Hefner is beginning to sprout.
When to move seeds from paper towels? Should I wait longer?

When is it best advisable to move seeds from damp papers towels to soil / growing medium?

I'm currently germinating 6 big bud seeds using the paper towel method. They've been in the towels now for about 48 hours and were previously soaking in a cup of water.

I can see on the seeds where the seed casing is starting to break and on the odd one or two I can see the tap root starting to come through.

Should I wait until the taproot is fully out of the seed casing? Or should I move them to soil after more of the taproot is sticking out?

Cheers

I'd say wait til' you've got like 1/4 inch of taproot, just to be sure they're all viable...

For me as soon as i see the seed start to crack open a little bit i throw them in there pots in a mini greenhouse. It depends how patient you are, also i germinate in 18 hours, try putting your papertowl in a baggie, and putting it on top of your tv, or computer, or on top of your fishtank light if you have a fish tank. Anything to get the temp nice and tropical in there. But if you want to wait to you see the taproot that works well, dont stress over it though. Once you see that they are cracked just put them a 1/4 inch in the soil, and in 2-3 days you will see them poke there heads out. Take it easy.

I find it's best when the tap roots are about 1/2 inch long. Too short and I don't have them pop thru the soil top.

Happy Germinating to you

It's rarely mentioned here but true: You can rip off the piece of paper towel that the seed sits on & plant it, therefore you never have to touch the seed. Planting a piece of paper towel won't hurt a thing.

Thats the best piece of advice thats new to me that Ive seen in awhile. Im always cautious about planting seeds and use tweezers so I never touch the tap root. Now I can be lazy and just grab the paper towel!

Hefner - I usually wait until theres about 1/2" tap root and plant them just under the soil...so the seed shell is just covered.

I like to wait until the taproot atleast 1/4". Everyone has their own style some persons plsce in medium jus as the seed cracks...ive even done a cpl that because i went to check them too late had already released taproot and cots (still closed) and when planted did just fine after a day or so.

I tend to put my seedlings about a half an inch under the top of the soil but never any deeper than this. I think this enables it maybe to have more surface area along the lower stem to grow more roots. My
