Talking Best Care for new seedlings.

Hello everyone!! I germed my seeds using the wet paper towell method, and got only 4 out of 10 seeds to germinate. I am just using some pretty old bag seed this go around, after I get this grow down i will probably plop down some $$ for good genitics. Anyway I planted the 4 seeds on Wed afternoon. (into 1 gallon pots with miracle grow potting soil mix (moisture control) with some vermiculite mixed in) Today I am the proud papa of 2 tiny seedlings. My question is this. I am using an air cooled 400w MH lamp on them. Will the HID hurt them at this young stage or is it not an issue? I have the lamp about 8 inches above the top of th pots. I put my hand under the light at soil level and it seemed ok(no burning/discomfort). I also have one of those remote temp sensors that is registering 82 degrees(again at soil level) Also is it ok for 18/6 at this point? or should I give a little dark time for the newborns? Thanks for any info and happy growing!!

In my opinion that is too close for seedlings. Should be closer to 2 feet until you have your second set of leaves. Mainly want to keep things moist during this time and the light may dry it out too quickly.

I subscribed to the 18/6 rule now and recommend going there from seedling.

Peace

i agree with MrHydro - those lights are way too close for seedlings! at this stage i put the lights about 2' above the plants & lower it regularly.

Yes it's to close until your seedlings have about their second set of serrated leaves keep the light 36" above them. Make the roots work not the foliage at this point or you'll end up with stringy plants in my experience.
