Grodan's seed starting method???
permalink

Fyi... first attempt at seed starting

I purchased the grodan 1'' starter cubes and followed the grodan directions perfectly: Soaked in ph adjusted water using g.h. ph-down, inserted 6 seeds, set in a humidity dome, and placed in my mechanical room which is dark and in the high 70's, and I mist daily to make sure they stay moist but not soaked

It's been a little over TWELVE days and nothing. Has anybody tried this method? Modified this method? Suggestions?

Or am I just being a nervous new parent here???

I always have really good luck with grodan cubes, their instructions work perfectly for me.

Did you possibly put your seeds in upside down? You want the pointed side down. If they went in upside down your sprouts could be having a hard time poking their heads up, those holes are a little deep.

Seeds going in upside down don't matter.

I've waited for over 2 weeks to see a bean crack in water. Soil could be a bit longer.
Be patient.
Have you investigated at all?

Peace-

I've always heard and read quite a bit here that it doesn't matter how you place your seeds in your medium of choice. Nature will take its course and they will find a way to survive.

Seeds are only about 1/2'' down and covered, and I didn't pay attention to which side was up. but I'm afraid to mess with them while they're germinating. So I don't know if they've cracked down inside the cubes.

Should I try a heat mat?

Lights? I have a double T-5 ready to go

I'm a and threw mine directly under a 250w HPS. I did seriously think it would work. WRONG. Those little cubes dry up way to fast. I knew I could use them for clones...but with clones being under the ventilated dome.

I'm going to experiment with some bag seeds this weekend or the next. Try out the grodan under low light with plenty of moisture and the dome this time. I would search it, but searches usually end up with one sentence of useful advice from over hundreds of threads and thousands of posts. I'm only doing this for info on how they react to more intense/weak lighting and how their water levels and germination levels coincide. Probably keep them under 46/69w of CFLs and possibly a 3 ft flouro shop light.

Try a heating pad set on low under the seedlings. If it gets too warm, use towels between the mat & seedlings.

seeds need warmth to germinate. Put them on a heating pad on low or a seedling heat mat.
