Jiffy VS Soil

I have some seeds germinating, I bought Jiffy pellets a while back. All I have done previously is germinated seeds and put them in soil in a cup. Does anyone do the jiffy method?

Jiffy or Soil? also if it's wise to use jiffy, is it ok to germinate the seeds first and then put them in the jiffy pellet? I saw that the package said to put the seeds ontop and then sprinkle more of the peat moss ontop. which of course you couldn't just put the seeds on top if you had them germinated.

Whats everyone's opinion on this?

I use Jiffys..... I germ my seeds in paper towels first, then transplant into the jiffy's.

I soak the pellets for a while to expand them, with plain water, then gently squeeze any excess out once they've expanded fully, then I put the seeds in with tweezers, and just gently compact the top of the pellet to keep hold of the seed.

Once the roots have started showing thru the netting, you can transplant them into pretty much any medium you want.

thanks so much,

how long would you guesstimate that you grow the sprout before you put it in a cup of soil?

I usually wait till the roots are showing thru the netting before I transplant....I'm a DWC man tho, so the roots need to be a decent size before going into the net pots,

I cut some holes in some styrene (plastic card) slightly smaller than the size of the pellets..and put it on top of a propagation tray, creating a covered chamber inside, where the jiffy can hang, alowing the roots to gro freely rather than be hindered by the bottom of the tray

the whole lot is then covered with the propagation lid.
I spritz mine with a weak Rhizotonic / Seaweed foliar for the first few days, and have them under a small CFL to help establish the roots, and get them used to having lights above their heads. then once the roots are long enough, into the net pots they go, and off to the DWC `buckets.

william7 is starting to vegetate.
Thumbs up

whoa buddy!
please don't try to germ directly in the peat pods(i did once and lost $200. cause they are so dense) .paper towel um before hand and don't skimp on letting them root for a while. I have also mixed expanded peat pods with rinsed perlite and had good results. good luck my friend....................btw ocean forest soil by fox farm is the best success for germing seed for me ,ever single one every time they always pop and it all ready has all your nutes and beneficial fungi

eh I decided to just put my $ seeds into soil solo cups because I have no experience with jiffy pellets, but I have 10 jiffy pellets that I'm gonna experiment on with free bagseed. Just to get an idea of how they work

Thats exactly how I do it except I use chop sticks!

That card / prop tray idea is GOLDEN! I might start leavin them in the jiffy like you using this method.

i will have to do a big thumbs down on jiffy pellets and pots. for one ht pellets are dense and i could barley germ my vegie seeds along with the good ones. they eventualy algaed up and died. the pots are crap roots cant penetrate them that well. just go buy some good loamy soil and skip paying extra for just some peat moss in a net. FFOF ftw!

man I've never had a bad jiffy experience whatsoever. I think you didn't let it soak expand and soften up enough. One thing I always do is use hot water, that both warms the soil and makes sure it all gets disolved and soft
