How far should a T5 light be away from seeds in rockwool cubs that have just began. day 1

8 bulbs 54 W per bulb.

How should this be determined?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a ton of light for seedlings. I'd say 6 inches then lower them gradually as leaves appear.

Once true leaves appear then 3 inches. Once they're running you can get closer still.

And if you have the system that lets you turn on half the bulbs at a time, go with that for seedlings/clones.

Oh, how did you get those numbers just out of curiosity?

Because possibly a seedling needs a certain number of watts to grow and a certain distance away and you estimated at the amount of watts i was using..?

AG5678--Yeah I agree with analog. For them just coming thru the soil, you could go as cheap as a cfl for getting them going too and wouldn't make a difference with the light, and don't use up the bulbs on them so young when it wouldn't benefit from it. T5 bulbs are supposed to last a year before needing to be replaced. Once they have sprouted then that T5 will kick ass for you, after just a couple inches tall, you can pretty much have them as close to the light as possible, but touching the light will burn the leafs. I get mine within an inch of as many as possible with my T5's, but sometimes didn't move it soon enough and have burned leafs from touching T5's. Nice light choice too. For plants just sprouting, there isn't a formula I use for the distance from the light, it's usually the back of the hand for seeing if it's too hot, and T5's don't get hot, so that doesn't work. You just want to be the most careful right when they are coming thru the rockwool, make sure they have enough humidity, and just enough light to get them on their way, then grow them as big as you want. More light at this stage isn't an advantage, or give you anything quicker.
