Question How early is too early for HID?
permalink

Im a first time grower, and i just finished germinating some seeds. I have some floros and 400w HPS lights as well. But im not to sure if i should stay with the florescents for a bit or just go right to the HPS. Not sure if the 400w HPS would be too strong for the new sprouts? If someone with some experience could maybe help me out that would be great!

IMO Never. I clone under 1000watt hps and mh. Just keep em at a distance.

I feel the same way, many people clone and put sprouts under hid lights. Just as salt said, start them off at a distance.

Ditto all this. I vegged mine for a week after they sprouted under 96 watts T5 then straight to 1100 watts 40" above the plants. Constant breeze and temp control. Straight into 5 gallon buckets too. They loved it. If you know they are females this is the way to go. No transplant stress and with that much light the roots can really take off. Growth rate when done correctly is phenomenal.

I put mine under floros until they get their second, sometimes third, set of leaves and then put them under a MH. I would say to keep your MH about 3-4 feet above your sprouts at that stage so they don't get burned. When switching to MH, you can always have your light further away to be safe and then lower it a little bit every day. But, like I said, keep them at least 3 feet away at first, I would say that 4 feet would be best at the start.
