is there any point to germing seeds until the sprout is an inch or so long. my stepson says they shouldn't be put into soil until they have long tails on them. i usually plant them when they pop.

I haven't popped seeds in a year, I think you should let them get a little tail, 1/2", at least. Had 100% luck in the past, that's the only thing I can think I did differently this time, having mixed results, but I didn't let them get tails this time.

My opinion has been the longer "the tail", the easier it is to damage it during planting.

Dont let the tail get more than a 1/4 to 1/2 inch because when I planted it in the soil, it just stopped growing because I damaged the root.

I soak my beans in a warm glass of water anywhere from 12-24 hours, then plant directly into soil. 95% success rate so far.

I have to agree with pm on this. The longer the tap root, the harder it is to plant and the easier it is to break the tap root. The easiest way to kill a plant before you get started with it is to break the tap root and they are brittle little guys.

I agree, I don't really worry about how long the tail is. As long as the shell popped and the tail is poking out 1/8 of an inch or longer you should be fine.

Just had 12/12 pop when planting directly to soil after soaking for about 16 hrs, within about 3 days they were above soil.

I soak 24 hrs any that havn't cracked at that point get "Help"... then into the papertowel untill I see a taproot... I don't let it get long... as noted, they are easy to break... I then plant them in cups of pure perlite... I find it much gentler to plant in

I plant mine in rockwool, about a 1/4 inch deep as soon as the shell splits open, I soak my rockwool in 5.5 water and away we go.
