I've used Mandala technique when I bought a bunch of their strains...it all works. Different strokes for different folks. If you don't follow their guide, doesn't mean your beans won't germ

i had good luck w/ mat

but i have to say germ from seed 2x in my life i have had 2 mats break

i bought the one from the hydro store one time it was the mat

another time it was the thermostat

i think i might just use the ones you get from walmart or pharmancy next time

my wife - who is very sick uses them and she gets atleast 6 months from one and she uses it every day

in my experience (which is little) the ones from the hydro store suck

I will always use a heating mat till I die

it makes it optimal temp in a rapid rooter , gets the humidity high using a dome. no reason not to use one. My at is like 6 years old and still works ( its a hydrofarm one I believe )

also dont use the paper towel method, keep it easy and just pop it in a rapid rooter or the medium your using

The boiling your seed problem is easily solved by adding a bigger container with more water. If you use very small amount of water it can quickly get very hot. But i dont use a matt, i use an incandescent bulb. Its like a heating matt but backwards and cheap.

Mandala Gave Me This Idea
permalink

I place Fox Farm Light Warrior half filled in the little 6 pack rooter holders and water with filtered water until its all saturated. I have a 2 ' x 4 hydrofarm heat mat dialed into 80 degrees F. which is the same set up I use to make clones. I drop a seed into each unit resting on top of the soil - as Mandala Mike suggests, label it and move on to the next. when I have laid out all the seeds I want to germinate, I place the humidity dome on the tray , place on the mat and walk away. I check every 8 to 12 hours for sprouts and to make sure its humid in there.

When it does start drying out, I take a spray bottle with filtered water or Aquafina low PPM
drinking water and spay the units making sure the seeds are wet and exposed. Sometimes with my hard to crack seeds, I use a mix of Inoculaid ( which is hands down a great all around mainstay in my garden and around the house ). and spray this in.
You will see life if there is any to be found!

( the seedlings in the picture in #1 post are 12 to 18 hours from the package into the seedling mix )

Now, most of the time the little tap root will find the dirt and start itself sending the plant upward. However, when there is a problem, I dig a little hole and place the root downwards and cover with more mix. I like to put more mix into the unit or small container which stabilizes and protects those precious little roots. The nex pic shows some young seedlings ready to be given a a little more mix.

keyplay- Thanks for the writeup.

I have been growing them in hempy mix. germinated in rockwool. Tried to do it all completely by the Mandala book (except for using a heating mat, which they say not to, but my space was so cold I don't think I had a choice).

My seedlings were planted on Feb 13, and now look about like the one in the bottom left of your last photo. That is, some ok-sized single-bladed serrated leaves, and tiny tiny growing tips that barely change each day. Do you think this is slower-than normal growth? My memory is hazy, but I thought 2 week old plants would be a lot fatter than that.

Anyway, glad to see that Mandala takes to a variety of planting techniques. After my damping-off disaster (10 out of 10 died!) I think I will stick to using soil for germination.

Sometimes they take a minute to start. Also, its been cold where I'm at with cooler temps.

i have both tried the straight to soil and the papertowl, with or without heat.

i have very low rh, so i have to spray too much or put something on top of the soil to keep it from drying up, havent had that many dryouts, but a few. so now i papertowl.

and then drop the seed in soil when roots appear.

its much easier to keep the papertowl wet and its a shorter time you have to keep spraying the soil so much, although now i put the top half of a 2l bottle on top of the soil, one slim cut in the side for air. *and keep that on the seedling for a week or so*

you also dont wait for a week maybe or longer, spraying seeds that never come up.

i havent noticed a difference in heat, except..that ive only used the heat lately in daytime *a lamp i put the seeds on top of* and they never ever sprout except in the night. its always in the mornings when i wake up and check that seeds have sprouted.

and my nights have been rather chilly lately, wake up not wanting to leave the bed.

makes me wonder if its the night or the lower temps *spring, when seeds sprout, is cold after all?* i think its the night though.
