Mary Jane seeds germ'd when to add lights?
permalink

Howdy all
My first post here I have successfully germinated one seed and it is already popping out of my rockwool. It is popping out roughly 1/2 " but the seed is hanging off to the side. I have attached a quick drawing showing what it looks like (sorry my camera is broken at the moment)

My question is when should I introduce some fluorescent lighting? Wait untill it shakes the seed casing?

hoping you all can provide me some knowlege that will help a new comer through his first grow.

Thanks all

Cheers

You can give it a little 13w or 23w CFL action right now.

Easy does it, they are tender at this age keep the CFL
about a foot away until it gets some leaves.

The seedling will follow the light... up...

I do not have any CFL's, only tube 32w T8 fluorescents. How far should the light be away from the plant at this time? Do I leave the cover of the humidity dome on or off?

Seedlings at that stage love humidity. Leave the lid on...

wow, the lights have been on for about 4hrs now, and the seedlings have already started to straighten out. They are close to being 1" out of the rockwool . When will i know when to take off the cover on the humidty dome and switch them to 18on/6off? At that point I believe i should be lower my fluorescents to be 3-5 inches away from the top of the seedling, is that correct?

Welcome to the [b][/GardensCureB]

I would keep the sprouts under the Humidity Dome, with your light as close to the dome as you can get it. After they get their 2nd set of true leaves or about a week is when you will want to take the lid off.
You can run 24x0 or 18x6 for the 1st 4 to 6 weeks.
Depending on how big you want them to get will tell you when to switch them to your new flowering light

Thanks EZMark, couple of questions though....

1)you say after the 2nd leaves form and i take off the lid, would I again lower the lights to be closer to the new seedling?

2)you say You can run 24x0 or 18x6 for the 1st 4 to 6 weeks....can I run them 24/7 untill they develop the 2nd set of true leaves, take the lid off, lower my light, then switched to 18/6 for the remainder of the vegitation state? Or is that just added change to cause stress?

Thanks agian

If you're using CFLs the whole way through, keep them as close as possible the whole time. So around 2 inches away should keep them as close as possible without burning the tips of your leaves. Otherwise they're gonna stretch out a ton to get to the light and fall over.
