When to give up
permalink

I'm working on my 4th grow now, but I've been on hiatus for about a year, and I've forgotten most everything I've learned.

I have but 1 question (for now):

When should I give up on a particular seed after it has been planted? I planted 2 seeds, 1 in a pot 48 hours ago the other in a cup 24 hours (both with moist soil), and neither has even cracked yet (that I can tell). In my past grows, the seed would generally pop within about 24-36 hours so I have no idea how long is too long to wait before deciding that the seed isn't really viable. They are both about 2.5 years old, but have been stored in a sealed plastic container in the fridge the entire time so they should be okay.

The room is colder than my past grows, and I don't really have a great way to heat it up any more without turning on the big lights (I'd say that it's about 55F, which, though not optimal, seems okay considering Springtime temps would easily be that low were this outside) so I don't have a great measuring stick for seed popping time. I may put another in a seed starter and put it in a warmer place, but then again, if all 3 turn out to be good I don't have the room for all 3, and I'd hate to waste a perfectly good seed.

If it matters, 1 is Blueberry, the other is Orange Bud, both feminized, and I have grown both successfully in the past.

I'm not being impatient. I simply want to avoid throwing away a perfectly good seed, nor do I want to wait unnecessarily long only to find that, for one reason or another, this seed won't pop.

after about the 2nd or 3rd week i pretty much give up on a seed that hasnt popped yet. most of the time, by then, they are mushy and abt to rot stage. no real chance of germination. i have had some seeds take up to 2 weeks to pop, so that should tell you something. i dont think ive ever had anything take much longer. they just get soft, and start to rot after a point.

I've decided to move the cup temporarily to a warmer spot. I've also decided that though seeds can be expensive, even if I waste a few I more than make up for a wasted seed (or 2 or 3 or 4 . . .) with just one good grow, so I've also planted another Blueberry in a cup to join my already existing cup of Orange Bud in a warmer place. If I have to throw an extra on the fire, so be it (I only have the capabilities for 2).

Though spring it is, it's still damn cold and my basement temp is running 50-55F without a heater, and I don't have a spare. Once I turn on the HPS bulbs (dual 150W), the ambient temp should rise to where the temp is reasonable and sustainable.

I have always had more luck with warmer temps when germing seeds. The few
times the temps have gone below 60, no seeds came up and I killed a few that were just
starting .. Good move moving the cup to a warmer spot. I use the paper
towel method on top of the cable box and usually have seeds cracking with tap roots
about 14 - 30 hrs later. Then I usually move them to my starting media.

I agree with the others .. after 2 weeks ish or how mushy they appear, I throw them out.

Good luck to you.

What they said.

I grow in my basement and find that starting anything below about 65 deg takes forever. Below 60 probably won't start at all - Jorge says that mj plant activity stops at about 55. I'm also starting tomatoes, peppers, parsley and broccoli for both my indoor and outdoor gardens, along with my mj seedlings.

I bought a grow mat from the hydro store and put it under the seedling tray. It's supposed to raise the temperature only a few degrees above ambient; it helps.
