Germing very old Seeds.
permalink

Ive got some very old seeds, (15 years) .
The 1st few years they were stored in very undesirable conditions after that they were refridgerated.
Ive decided to give them a go as they were very nice genetic and no sed bank sells them or they have a diff name now. (Buddah x PapuaNewGuinea gold ).
my problem is when attempting to germ most of them split a tap root appears sticks out about 2 millimetres an thats it,Ive never had germing problems before and ive tried numerous diff methods and its the same outcome.
Any ideas.................

I sure hope you can get some of those old beans to grow for ya!
I believe the problem is the new sprouts need a form of "food" as the "food" found in the seeds has deteriorated. I would sure try them in a potting soil with a VERY WEAK organic nute...

That's great, man. I hope you get 'em to grow too. Maybe you have some Great Lost Strains in there.

My first grow in six years was with seeds that were -um- six years old. They were not stored in refrigerators but were in mason jars. I actually had a good propagation rate...not 100% but I tried to germ enough so that I could afford some clunkers. I just used paper towels and then I did direct sowing to Rapid Rooters. I still have some BOG medley and Spice of Life Adventure packs to grow out and some other stuff. I'm particularly psyched about the BOG stuff as his strains are legendary and he ain't producing no mo'. It will have to wait though as I got some other genetics ahead on the run way.

My only question is whether a viable seed is a viable seed is a viable seed...or whether the age of the seed could cause a plant to mutate, hermie and/or not be vital. I think it's the former but I was wondering what others may have experienced.

Anyhow...GOOD LUCK!!!!

i wouldn't use any nutes at all. Most seedling starter soils have nutes in it.

good luck on getting them to germ

very cool!

...for my first indoor grow i included two old seeds just for fun. They were 7-8 yrs old and both germinated. They turned out to be sativa's and i couldn't get them to finish indoors, so i took a few cutting and grew two plants outdoors.

Best of luck...i'd love to see some pictures.

peace,

i would try and breed two of those plants together if i were you. That way, you'd have fresh seeds, and save the strain. Then you could store them properly too.
