Sadly i need help with the simplest thing in growing, Germing(few may agrue). I always use the paper towel method and 80% always go. But i only have 2 seeds in a tubaware container with 2 peices of moist paper in it, with 2 seeds inbetween that. My local connection with a dealer is not going well so i might not get some seeds soon. Can anyone help me with these seeds? they have been in the tubaware container for almost a week. I could crank up the heat i guess, the upstairs of my house is useally perfect for germing because its so hot. But its been midly cool up there this year so far.

try putting the paper towels in a cd case on top of a warm place. try to aim between 70-80 degress, if its too cool it will take longer for them to germinate. If that dont work try putting them in a cup of water in a dark place usually works for me

Im liking the CD case idea, thx.

My seeds were in a tubaware container surrounded by a small cloth and a hankerchief in a room of about 60-85degrees. But for some reason every time i grabbed the container it was cold. My guess was that the insulation of the towel was working agaist me by keeping it cold.

be careful with heating. i don't think it takes much more than the upper eighties to cook them.

Yea back to the heat thing,i was feeling energetic today so I decided to change things up a bit and i build a 3x3 ft box out of wood today and drilled a hole in the side and a bigger one in the top. I put the seeds in bio degradable pots with exspensive potting soil ( seems like theres too many nutes in it though) and stuck them in the box and put a skinny bare lamp through the side with a cfl bulb on it ( 3 inches away from the pots) and stuck a heat lamp ( has a regular bulb in it) on top (14 inches away). I then stuck this box in my block barn with a tarp thrown over it.

I will be useing this box for growing these and future plants till there ready for the great outdoors. Im kind of giving up hope on these seeds because they wouldnt germ but im still giving them a chance. The next set of seeds ill germ inside till the roots show and then put them in the box.

Ok now to the heat question, Will my box be too hot or not hot enough? the regular bulb will put out alot of heat and its 14 inches away( hopefully far enough not to burn the plants) so i think im good there. The cfl bulb will be the major light source. The barn should get cold at night, my weather is improving here but still is a bit chilly in the mornings. I would love to do this inside in a better controlled envirerment but ive been having quite a bit of company over so i think its best i keep this box in the barn.

Why don't you think about placing your beans directly into your medium or at the least, rapid rooters or rockwool? Might help solve any troubles you're having with the paper towel method, which can't compare really to the way nature does it.

The method I've always used and has always worked great is this.

Start with a well cleaned 1lb margarine container, and some real thick (bounty / etc) paper towel, the kind that doesnt turn to mush after a day of being wet.

Rip off about 8 - 10 sheets of the paper towel, and fold them up so they fit in the container and provide a relatively smooth surface. Insert, then soak with water until they are thoroughly saturated, but not sopping wet.

Now place your beans on top (1, 2, 300..) i usually do 100 or so per container incase one gets mouldy or whatnot, works just as well for a single seed tho.

Take 1 sheet, and cut it to the size of the container, so it can lie evenly on top of the wet paper towel,
and tap it a bit to make sure it creates 'pockets' of air around each seed.

Cut a 3-4 pencil-sized holes near the center of the lid.

Wrap with a towel, or paint / black magic marker the container beforehand.

After you are done, the container should be good for 3-8 days before you have to re-moisten. You can use a weak peroxide solution in a syringe to help add oxygen and fend off some fungus/bacterial infestations.

You should keep this somewhere it stays nice and warm
I used the back of my CRT monitor for years, but im a geek and it never turned off.
On top of a refridgerator, near the back but not on the element works well too.
That or anywhere else you have a nice constant source of warmth, not so much heat.

The important things a seed is looking for when it is trying to gerimate:

1: Dark (we want to grow under the ground..)

2: Heat (we want to grow when the sun is strong)

3: Moisture (we want to grow when its moist, not wet)

So keep it dark, keep em warm, and keep em steamy.

I spend alot of time trying to look @ the world from the perspective of my pot plants
Call me a stoner. but it works.
