![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Cool Stuff. How about seed pointing up or seed pointing sideways? There seems to be some disagreement on which way the seed should point when one plants it. I think the pointy end should face up but many people feel opposite. I wish I had a ton of spare seeds to do an experiment myself. Question, How are you going to remove the straw without damaging the seedling?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Status: Both sets of seeds show no visible activity. ... countyspud I hope that the 'Drop the Seed' aspect of Experiment 2 would make it such that I would not have to worry about the seed point issue. But I can start seeds point up. How about Seven seeds. When seeds have turned into seedlings the plan is to remove them from the straw holder. Seedlings in Experiment 1 are in a straw where the wick sticks out the top. I suspect that they can be removed by pulling the wick. Seedlings in Experiment 2 where there is no external wick, should be stout enough to pull out by the stem. No pinching, please. One could avoid removing the straw altogether by first cutting a vertical slit along the length. With the straw split, the seedling can be transplanted to anything. Leave the straw or peel it off. I'll see what I can do about the seed point up question.

Experiment 3: What happens if one Stuffs the seed Point-Up into wick? Difference between Experiment 1, Experiment 2, and Experiment 3: (1) Seeds placed point down...........(2) Seeds dropped into space..........(3) Seeds stuffed point up. (1) Seeds unexposed in wick...........(2) Seeds rest exposed on wick........(3) Seeds unexposed in wick. (1) Glass placed in dark cabinet.......(2) Glass in dark, warm cabinet.........(3) Glass in dark, warm cabinet. (1) Straw-Wick propped up in glass..(2) Straw-Wicks stuffed in rockwool..(3) Straw-Wicks stuffed in rockwool.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I added a point-up test because countyspud asked; I had the seeds; and I was curious. I'm trying wicks to draw water because I want to get rid of rock wool. I placed the wick into a straw to drive the root down. I think of the straw and wick as a miniature hydro system. The straw is the net pot. The wick is the rock wool. I tried rolling seeds in a paper towel thinking that the root would grow to one side of the roll or the other, but only one seed took. Too wet.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If I understand, P3nelope, you are right about the confounding variables. I can see two differences between Experiment 1 and Experiments 2 and 3. The seeds are not in the same location (environment variable) and they are not supported the same (method variable). I did not want to change Experiment 1. The first day the glass actually stayed out in the open on my kitchen counter. Later I moved the glass to a kitchen cabinet. When I started the other two experiments I decided that a dark warm environment was best and it was easy to support the Straw-Wick in rock wool. The environment is my Entertainment Cabinet which is quite warm. So I did that. Finally, a paper towel method control would have been a nice idea. That way if nothing sprouted including the paper towel, I could take some comfort in the fact that the method may not be the issue.
