I've solved this problem thusly: Take a jar of 3% H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide), agitate + soak your seeds for 5 minutes before placing in germinating media. This should eliminate mold spores from the seeds.

Some companies use Clorox the same way, diluted 10:1. I'm a little not-so-fond of bleach smell. H2O2 breaks down to oxygen and water. Leaves no residue or smell.

Many scientific seed germinating protocols call for dipping your seeds in diluted bleach (then rinse, rinse, rinse) and an H202 solution.

It is not as common a practice as it used to be what with the advent of seed banks who take precautions but is still practiced widely.

I figure it can't hurt so I am going to adopt this routine starting on my next grow.

'Cleaning' the seeds sounds like a good idea. I should do that. These seeds, of course were grown by me with no precautions taken. I should expect a few nasties.

Removed sprouts from straws
permalink

I've removed all experiment sprouts from their straw. The wick is still attached. Twelve sprouts remain.

Sprouts where the wick could be pulled up from the top transferred easily to the holding media. In my case that media is Closed Cell Foam.

Sprouts where the wick could not be pulled up from the top could be removed from the straw from the bottom if the plant 'head' was small enough to pass through the straw. These also went into the holding media simply.

Sprouts where the wick could not be pulled up from the top and could not be pulled down from the bottom required extra care. I twisted the wick from the bottom to screw it up to the top enough to grab the wick with tweezers and pull from the top. This was extremely stressful. I'm not sure that the sprouts liked it either.

Two Lessons Learned.
  1. Make sure you leave enough wick at the top of the straw to pull from the top.
  2. Cut the straw down its vertical length such that the straw does not have to be removed.

I'm not sure that there will be anything else to say about this.

Conclusion: I will use this method to germinate seeds and to direct root growth in my Closed Cell Foam media. If splitting the straw side causes unexpected issues, I'll post that.

voodoo I do have a space challenge; however, if I can keep these going, I will post an update and, perhaps a link to a new grow journal. Thank you for your comments and encouragement.

Thank you, Them.

it seems an aweful lot of extra work with little extra benefit. and what about when the stalk of the plant starts to grow? it's still stuck in the non permiable foam? you don't think that's going to restrict growth?

I mean no offense. just curious. very cool to see those sprouts sticking out of the straws like that. lol

What happens to the straw?
permalink

Good questions, mattdreads, thank you. Cutting the straws and wicks may be a little more work than ... whatever the comparison is. But the benefit, if achieved, is a drier, healthier, more supportive environment for the bulk of the grow time. That is significant in my environment.

If we split the straw down the side then we never have to remove the straw. The straw will expand around the base of the plant trunk.

The attached photo is of two blocks of foam from which I have removed a harvested trunk. The photo shows how the foam impresses as the trunk grows.

With the straw cut down the side, picture an approx 1" wide plastic strip plastered against the foam. That will be the straw. This foam was cut from a 2" diameter five foot tube.

Once the root is past the foam, there is no further issue.
