Seven Seeds of Straw Wick
permalink

My goal is to use Closed Cell Foam to hold my plants. Part of that goal is to start seeds directly in a Water Maid Wick then place the germinated seed into the Closed Cell Foam.

I can start seeds in Water Maid Wicks alone. I did this a few months ago. But, as the reader can see from the first photo/diagram, three seeds sent their roots out the side of the wick. The errant roots shot out of the wick and embedded themselves in the cells of the foam media. These roots got 'Caught' in the foam cells which prevented further growth.

To prevent the new seed root from growing into the Closed Cell Foam walls, I added a piece of Drinking Straw. The thought is that the root will grow down the straw. Once the root has sufficiently grown down the straw, I remove the straw and place the wick with seed (seedling) into my Closed Cell Foam media.

Seeds used in the experiment are Skunk #1 from a Jun 25, 2008 harvest.

I hope it works.

Here are some photos. I'll provide updates.

scrub, that looks very promising technique but I think this thread will get the correct attention at, The seed germination forum.

Hey scrub,

Love the idea! I am using a wicking system on my hand water coco thread. I plan on updating it with pics in the next few days (camera got dropped in my nute bucket...don't ask).

I havn't seen wick's used for germination though.. I just drilled a hole in the center of my 6" x 6" square pot(s) and set the square pots in a round 3/4 gallon pot. The wick is then stacked up to encompass the etire surface of the bottom pot, so if I do have run-off the nutrient will just be "wicked" back up into the root zone. I also using cutom micro-fiber wicks I made out of a few towels I got a wal-mart.

Once these root, are youplaning on transplanting them to a bubbler, or some type of DWC system?

I hope that the seeds will grow into seedlings while in the straw. The drinking straw is a sort-of mini-netpot. Yes, I will transplant the seedlings into my bubbler.

Actually, I may not have space to put these in my bubbler. If there is no space, they will be retired.

Experiment 2: Drop Seed Uncovered onto Wick
permalink

Experiment 2: What happens if one just Drops the seed on the wick instead of placing it?
  • Cut straws and wicks.
  • Put wick into straw leaving about 1/4 inch space at the top of the straw.
  • Dropped seed into 1/4 inch space at top of straw.
  • Folded extra wick in a 'U' at the base of the straw.
  • Stuffed the Straw-Wick into rock wool as a holder.
  • Placed the Straw-Wick/rock wool into a glass of water.
  • Placed the glass into a dark, warm cabinet.

Difference between Experiment 1 and Experiment 2:

(1) Seeds placed point down..............................(2) Seeds dropped into space.
(1) Seeds placed unexposed, into the wick...........(2) Seeds rest uncovered, on top of the wick.
(1) Glass placed in dark cabinet..........................(2) Glass placed in dark, warm cabinet.
